Okay, I just uninstalled 6.12.34, downloaded 6.10.60 for Windows 64 bit, tried to install it, and got a message the installer doesn't support (or isn't supported by, whichever) my processor. I bought this computer used, so I'm not exactly sure of its specs, but before I downloaded I checked the Windows System screen. It says I have an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+. Doesn't that mean it's 64 bit? Or did AMD name it 64 just for the hell of it?

I deleted the 64 bit installer and downloaded the 32 bit, and it installed and is running fine (and downloaded 2 new tasks in 12 and 13 seconds respectively). Maybe now this machine will finally decide to get an Einstein once in a while.

Your AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ host only has 32bit Windows XP.

Hello everybody!

I was away from BOINC for a while because of personal reasons and I'm back now since a few days. My main project now is Test4Theory but that project only uses one of the cores of my dual core processor so while I'm not at home and not using my computer the other core (and the GPU) need some work also and so I deceided to run some SETI tasks.
Unfortunatly I was only able to run a few tasks because I either

a) don't get any tasks
b) can't download the tasks I get
c) can't upload and report finished tasks

I have no idea what's wrong with this project but at the moment it sems to be a waste of time. Let me give you an example. I started my computer around 11 a.m. today and until now (2 p.m.) haven't been able to run any SETI task:

Nope you are stuck. 6.10.xx works a little better but even with that I am still struggling to get tasks. I can't fill my cache by any sense of the word and mine is only set for 5 days. I am lucky if I can get 1 day.

All projects recommend the the latest version, even SAH.

I would suggest you try a roll back and see how it works. I would suggest you let your Test4Theory work units run out first before you try it though just in case.

BOINC is just a shell that the projects use as a wrapper for their own applications, BOINC itself does no crunching its an administrative program. So theoretically you should be able to use 6.10.58 or 60 without a problem.

In principle you are right, but the newest BOINC clients have features specific for T4T's virtual machine handling.

Different versions of BOINC have different - steadily increasing - levels of native support for different sorts of new hardware.

Thus - for true, native support on projects with built-in applications, not the fiddling around with app_info.xml that we do here - you'd probably need to be using:

v6.10.xx for NVIDIA (CUDA) apps
v6.12.xx for ATI (CAL) apps
v7.0.xx for ATI/NV (OpenCL) apps

Test4Theory probably requires (not just recommends) something late in the v6.12.xx range to support their virtualisation - I haven't checked recently, they're a one-off.

I downgraded to 6.10.60, no change. It still won't download anything new. In the log it says "Message from server: Project has no tasks available". I was able to upload all my results, though.

Thx folks. I was able to get at least a few tasks today, let's hope things get better soon.

As for T4T and the BOINC client: It looks like 6.12.34 is just recommended at the moment but may be required in the near future:

Upgrade BOINC client to version >= 6.12.34
In the last days we have upgraded the server to benefit from some of the new features related to virtual machines included in the BOINC server.

The BOINC client has been also improved with new features for virtual machines and we want to test them (detection of VirtualBox, installation, etc.), for this reason we want you to upgrade to the latest stable version of the BOINC client.

Meanwhile, we will add more WUs for the old BOINC clients, so you can keep working with the project. However, we will be moving forward gradually tothe latest stable versions of BOINC as this will help everyone to have a more stable work flow, so if you can, upgrade your BOINC client.

Regards,

The team

Additionally, here's what Daniel (one of the Project Admins for T4T) wrote on the forums:

....Since we launched the version 7.03 of the application, you should be getting only new tasks if your client has a version 6.12.X. The reason is that the new BOINC client (and the latest stable one) is aware of VirtualBox and this will suppose a major benefit for the project and the users, as some of the problems that we have in the past have been addressed in these latest releases. Thus, please, if you can, update your BOINC client.

We know that there are a lot of users with a version 6.10, and we are still thinking what to do about these users, as with a BOINC version 6.10 there are some problems with this project. We will keep you posted about this issue, so please, stay tuned!

How about 7.0.2 ? Same backoff times as 6.12.34 ?

Yes, but also a new work-fetch policy as described in ClientSchedOctTen.

Lets see, I run a real Windows 7 platform, since Virtual Box is not for Windows from what the wiki says, I'll stay with 6.10.58, As I don't like how 6.12.xx acts, as It sounds like It will always be No work and is the wrong way and If that means saying goodbye to Seti@Home then so be It.

I have posted to the BOINC mailing lists regarding the backoff's being too agressive in later versions. Hopefully something will come out of it.

The backoffs would be OK under normal circumstances- ie network traffic was only maxed out for a few hours a day, or for a half a day in a week.
But since the traffic is always maxed out (unless the system is down), clients just won't get any work because of the length of the backoffs & the rate at which they ramp up.

This seems to say that support for 6.10.xx is being dropped, can anyone confirm this is true? It seems like a lot of people are still running the old versions because they still work the best.

What is the source of this information about version 7.03 being launched?

Regards,

The team
