Bernie, just smile admiringly and say "nice boots". That's always worked for me. But try to avoid drooling, that seems to negate the compliment for some reason.

I own a couple of pair that look similar to those. One of them has all the tread worn off (quite a trick since most of the walking was done on dirt).
