Thanks for the kind words everyone. It's nice to know the SETI folks are reading what I post here :)
Here's a bit of news:
1. As of today, SETI at Home has everything they need on hand to implement and test the 45 drive JBOD our donors have provided SETI. They have on hand the JBOD and 24 2TB drives to get the machine up and testing. I've no idea how long it will take Matt et al to shake the JBOD out like they like it, but the good news is it will soon be up and running to make things smoother at SETI.
2. Member Thomas Arnold donated $1,000 to the Astropulse server and a further $109 toward the remaining RAID drives today. That puts us quite a large step closer to providing a new AP server for SETI. My hat's off to him for his overwhelming generosity.
3. Member Deltoid donated 4 2TB drives to the SETI project which arrived yesterday.
4. The 6 3TB hard drives our donors purchased for SETI at Home have been delivered. This should be seen as good news for our Astropulse crunchers as these donated drives will provide more data for them to process.
5. I'm not sure that I've mentioned this before, but upon completion of either the Astropulse server or the RAID hard drive fundraisers, we will open up a fundraiser for a new, custom built download server for SETI at Home. The components for this server can be found on our hardware donation page at http://gpuug.org/catalog. We've decided not to run the download server fundraiser concurrently with the RAID/AP fundraisers as we would really like to complete either of these projects and deliver them to SETI asap. The RAID array was #1 on the SETI wishlist, followed by the AP server at #2 requested by Jeff.
Lastly, please consider helping us out with our current projects. If you can only spare $5, please send that along as $5 at a time helps us steadily advance toward our goal of providing the SETI at Home community a more stable project backbone.

Big time kudos to speedbump and MarkJ for their even bigger contributions and to everyone who has contributed monetarily (well, not to the $0.01 and $2 ones.)
What I would like to see is a fund drive to get 1% of users to pony up. Those $5, 10, or twenty spots would really add up!

Yep agreed on all parts. Speedbump and MarkJ have really kicked this thing along as well. Coupled with donors like these, donors who send in $5-10 helps us complete projects ricky tick. Heck Mark donated $500 toward our 45 class drives today, which has us knocking on the door of $2,000 to go.
I hope our donors take pride in knowing they're directly funding the search for ET. Their dollars are transformed into the hardware that is processing massive amounts of data in this search. To me at least, that's a very cool feeling.

A quick word about the SSD drives we're looking for:
Earlier I mentioned SETI at Home was looking for SSD's to test throughput improvements. Here's what they're wanting:
1. 2-3 TB worth of SSD's which will be linked together in a RAID configuration inside an internal JBOD.
2. These drives are at the bottom of the SETI wish list.
3. The idea is to implement this JBOD in various ways in an attempt to address bottleneck issues.
Due to the extravagant cost of SSD's, especially the quantity and configuration requested by SETI, we at the GPU Users Group have decided to put this project on the back burner. Instead we are focusing on more immediate needs such as finishing the RAID array, building the Astropulse server and lastly building a new download server.

Yesterday I was able to donate a little something to the GPUUG effort to populate the RAID array.
If you take the goal for that funding drive and divide it by the 45 drives they are trying to purchase, you get about $160.24. I couldn't buy a drive. I could see my way clear to making a $100 donation toward one, though.
Surely someone who hasn't pitched-in yet can pick-up the other $60.24 and complete the purchase of that one drive I couldn't buy on my own.
Someone new maybe who didn't feel they'd be able to do enough to matter. It'll matter. It's the difference between no new drive and a new, shiny RAID drive.

And they should be Enterprise level SSD's, not off the shelf retail units, if and when the SSD's are off of the back burner.

How much cash is needed for a replacement of the download server?
For the server Matt and Jeff want, with our corporate sponsor building it at a steep discount, we are looking at $8,100usd. Add four percent for Paypal fees for an estimate. I'm on my cell but I will post the exact specs when I get on a pc.
Basically this will replace at least one download server and perhaps both depending. I'm not qualified to comment on this aspect truth be told. I do know this new server will be attached to a large raid 10 array held by the donated RAID array however.

Hello, EPG! The security certificate is correct and issued to www.gpuug.org. I don't know what you're looking at, but they do indeed match. This is not an extended validation cert, so no owner info is listed. If you want, you can send me a screen shot of what you're seeing to webaster@gpuug.org.

Regardless, we don't collect your credit card info anyway, PayPal does, so you don't need to worry about about it. We're just securing your personal information and preparing for when we use Authorize.net somewhere in the near future. Please donate with confidence!

There is currently a hard drive shortage because of the flooding in Thailand.
Some analysts think it could continue into 2013.
I was just in Staples today (an office supply/computer store in New England) and most of the drives on the shelves were replaced with signs saying "Out of stock" due to the shortage, so buy 'em if you can find 'em.
