Water cooling and overclocking go hand in hand? Correct?

The biggest danger of overclocking is the heat. Water cooling eliminates the heat, so even at very high speeds and voltages, your CPU or GPU never see damaging temperatures. I have been running at extreme speed for over a year now with no problems.

I just thought of the following:

My PC, which has a defect connector for one of the discs that could be put in
(four drive bays in total), also has room for one additional monitor card on the motherboard.

Theoretically, I could also replace the Core i7-960 processor with the new Core Extreme 990X processor
(since the motherboard is said to be supporting the Core Extreme processor in general).

However, this processor is rather expensive.

Also there is room for a total of 24 GB of RAM on the motherboard - I got 16 GB installed. You need a 64 bits operating system like Windows Ultimate (which comes in both 32-bits and 64-bits version, really - I bought both versions with this computer).

Is this worth making an investment into? I do not have water cooling on my mind, however, but do have a big fan manufactured or named Noctua (the cover it came in calls it NF-P14 FLX). Also I am wondering about how to get this big fan into the PC. Also, I received for free in the purchase an additional extra fan which looks like it is meant for the processor - which already has a bigger fan mounted atop it for cooling.

You can play games with these things?

What's a "game"? Do I have to find my dictionary, again?

I think it's something folks do when they are not crunching Seti......not sure.

Oh yea, thats RIGHT! When SETI@home was launched I had a Brand New top-of-the-range Pentium II 266Mhz machine with W95 and it could play Solitaire or Minesweeper!!

I thought, "what harm could come to me? I`ll try it just the once, I`ll be in control, no problem."
I tried it.
Well, soon I was looking for more. And more. Soon I was out of control, remortgaged the house for a new rig. Did unspeakable things to get the latest and greatest Nvidia card........
I lost all my friends, I was shunned at social gatherings.
Eventually, the wife gave me an ultimatum:
Either Seti goes, or she does.
She went. She took the dog.
At least with them out of the way, I could concentrate on getting my RAC to 28k.
Sad, so sad.
Let this be a warning, my fellow crunchers.

So for the MSRP of that Mars II card you could buy 3 580s. I think I would do that & just bump their core clock the 9MHz to match that card.

With a standard 7 slot board, if the slots were configured correctly, you could get 3 of these in there with the correct case. So ending up with 6 580 GPUs. Which would be better than the 4 580 GPUs that would fit in the same MB. However again due to the coast it would be cheaper to get 6 580s and build 2 system with the same money it would take just to buy 3 of those Mars II cards. $750 should be enough to build a support system for 3 580 GPUs.
