Using latest BOINC for Win7 64bit and Lunatics 0.38 set at SSE4.1, no AP. 280.26 driver. All Win7 Updates. OS on SSD. BOINC on 2nd SSD.

2600K - H70 cooled; 16GB; 550ti; Z68 MB; no overclock

Prefs set for 6 cores and GPU run on Prefs.

GPU is not downclocking; 54C; Fan:46%; 268MB out of 1024; GPU Load: 80%; MEM controller: 39%; VDDC: 1.0750

CPU: Process Lasso shows usuage from 77% to 21% and going back to 77% 'bout every second or so. This is confirmed by my Cyberpower 1350LCD control panel software showing Watts used 280 to 200 and back 'bout every second or so. And also by CPU-Z showing 2600K going from 3800MHz to 1600MHz and back 'bout every second or so. CPU voltage bouncing from 1.256 to 0.984 and back. MEM usuage at 12%

Sometimes the CPU will stay at 3800MHz for 20 seconds or so then drop and right back again. But usually the second or so movement up and down.

My H70 cooler also confirms the CPU speed up and down by the Temp going from 48C to 35C and back.

I LIKE IT. Not saving any watts on GPU, but the CPU up and down is saving $$$.

As far as RAC goes, not a RAC hound. Only run BOINC when using computer and it is only on about 4 hours per day. And sometimes I forget to turn BOINC on right away.

I had a somewhat similar situation with an AMD quad core. IIRC, it was downclocking because a bad temp sensor on the MB was thinking the CPU was running too hot - it would downclock for a while, then go back to it's higher speed (in my case, 3200MHz/800MHz).

Only found out because I had another MB, and there it didn't downclock.

If yours is doing this every second or two, look at Preferences -> Advanced -> Processor usage. If it is < 100%, it will cause the usage to jump around in Task Manager (to match the % you have set). But I don't think that affects MHz directly...

Sounds more like Intel SpeedStep. It reduces the CPU speed to conserve power when it is not needed. Since he is only using 6 out of 8 cores for crunching, it's probably just cycling up and down constantly since it's only peaking around 80% load. If it were me, I would disable SpeedStep to force it at max speed all of the time. Crunching times would probably drop a little, and it would keep the CPU speed steady. I can't imagine that cycling the CPU between speeds and voltages 20 times a minute is good for it...

That's exactly it. AMD calls theirs "Cool & Quiet". If you want you can disable it in the BIOS, but that reduces the CPU's ability to conserve energy, and therefore money.

Otherwise it is normal behavior.

What's the difference between the above and wait states?

Cycling is the name of the game.

Billions of transitors firing on and off. All the time. The buses, registers, caches, and all the other electronic ditties doing their 1 and Os, on and offs, waits.

The Future of Conservation is in the Ability to shut the MO FOs down and fire 'em back up at every opportunity. Saving Energy. Conserving.

Trying to use the electron only when doing actual work.

Sounds good to me.

I don't think she is going to fry Scotty. Or fail sooner than later.

Switching on and off is what these babies are made to do.

As far a RAC-gain, lose, stay the same. No matter to me or ET.

A wait state tells the processor to do nothing but at full power and speed.

SpeedStep and Cool & Quiet turn those wait states into power saving features that turn parts of the CPU off when not in use.

You're right, these CPUs are made to conserve energy.

Noticed in BOINC Manager under Remaining(Time) the seconds countdown bounces up and down along with my CPU going from 3800MHz to 1600MHz and back to 3800MHz due to the Energy Saving Instructions of the 2600K.

Not talking shorties. It's the regular 1 hr. 20min+ WUs being ground by The CPU.

Example: 10 9 10 8 7 10 9 5 4 3

Seems to keep up with actual countdown of time remaining, as it jumps up and down.

I know no one cares what The Null Man has to say, but I like to post once in awhile, 'cause I can.

You've never had a processor with these features? It's normally one of the first things I always turn off - it's not to conducive to overclocking lol.

My Box Is Speedy enough for me. My Old, Slow Brain doesn't notice it. Just thought it neat all these apps/programs confirm it.

Besides, if I wanted to OC, I'm sure My Z68 UEFI Bios would allow me to Pump it Up to about 5GHz.

Speed when needed Bro. Slow when not.

Can you Dig it? I knew that you could.

actually you'll get better results by actually just leaving the power saver off. It isn't helping your cause(running seti@home) to have the CPU constantly try and downclock on you.

What!!!

Do you only turn it on for 40mins to 1hr per day? :D

Cheers.
