Message 1098882 - Posted: 19 Apr 2011, 5:01:56 UTC

can someone please walk me through what I need to do to get a Radeon 5770 running here. I only want to have the gpu crunch, no the CPU.

I have the latest driver installed from ATI's website.

Which apps do I get from lunatics and what else do I need to do?

What do I have to edit?

I read it but did not understand. So are there 2 apps I have to install? 1 for astropulse and 1 for the regular Seti jobs or did I misunderstand?

Also what about the command line options?

(If the first clicks on the above links do not lead you to my post - click the link again)

You have to first attach the computer to SETI

If you don't want the CPU part:

a) You can delete everything in the "Lunatics' Unified Installer"-created app_info.xml leaving only:
<app_info>

</app_info>
before you add the ATI parts

b) Or disable the CPU usage from the web SETI@home preferences:
Use CPU - NO
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project

The ATI app files (e.g. MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_r177.exe , MultiBeam_Kernels.cl , ...)
have to be in the same folder where the app_info.xml is:
.....\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\

The two main threads about the applications. One for MB http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=62990 and one for AP http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=63517 have links to the lunatics site with release notes. Where there are examples of what needs to be entered into your app_info.xml.
You can download them all from the lunatics download page.

Except that the ATI GPU AstroPulse is the older version at the "download page":
ATI GPU AstroPulse for OpenCL r456

Hmmm... Yes it is. I guess we will need to send them more coffee so they can work more than 23.5 hours a day. :)

Not exactly correct.

Yes its probably a good idea to use the unified installer to get optimized apps for the CPU and have an app_info template to work with. THe actual ATI optimized apps are like they've said are linked on the previously mentioned threads

Using the (revised) 0.37 Installer, to only install CPU app. then install
rev.516 and add the lines for GPU use. Works fine and makes chance for
errors, in app_info.xml file, lesser too, you only have to add lines for
ATI-GPU. (And ofcoarse the r516 executable and Astropulse Kernels files.)

I've yet to find out, [i]which files I've to use in case of r.177 CPU app.
(F.i. are the [i]standard or optimized MB app. files
needed as a 'fall-back' to CPU
in case of a VLAR?)
(Well, it's clear I've yet to spend {some} more learning time....)

It seems the original poster (NewtonianRefractor) installed successfully the ATI apps:

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=5900668&offset=0&show_names=1&state=0&appid=

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/host_app_versions.php?hostid=5900668

... except he uses the older version for AstroPulse:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1877814441

"Windows x86 rev 456"

The links Again:
ATI OpenCL AstroPulse (rev516)
http://lunatics.kwsn.net/12-gpu-crunching/ati-opencl-astropulse-rev516.0.html

Direct link to the .rar
ap_5.06_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATI_r516.rar

P.S.
I don't know how to find which of the r177 apps he uses:
MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_r177.exe
or
MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_HD5_r177.exe

Completed task shows: "SSE3x Win32 Build 177" "OpenCL version by Raistmer, rev177"
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1877807928

The modified for HD5xxx app_info.xml (part) is here (again):
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=63617&nowrap=true#1097406

(of course anybody can do this modification - I changed just the name of the .exe in the app_info.xml)

Theres no need for a fall back to CPU for VLAR WU's they work fairly well on the ATI GPU. I've got a couple of high end ATI's and they easily finish the WU's in 2 hours while running 2 at a time

See you are running Cypress & Cayman (5000 & 6000) series, I've 2 5870's.
So 'it' (rev.177) shouldn't be much of a problem, thanks for your swift reply ;).

(It's (stangely) gettin warm in Holland, 23 to 25oC, is quite extreme, for this time of
year, even have to put AC on, too!)

MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_r177.exe
or
MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_HD5_r177.exe

HD5 build should report in stderr: USE_OPENCL_HD5

EDIT: Build features: Non-graphics OpenCL IPP AMD specific USE_SSE3 x86
so it's non-HD5 build.

Message 1099238 - Posted: 20 Apr 2011, 19:27:46 UTC
Last modified: 20 Apr 2011, 19:29:01 UTC

I have several problems. First, the UI in windows 7 is a bit more sluggish when the GPU is crunching, but it is barely noticeable.

The problem is that when I am watching youtube videos the GPU somehow automatically downclocks to 400/900 clock vs the 900/1300 that it should be running at in 3D mode. Everything slows down then and it is impossible to use the computer at this point.

When I close the tab with the flash player, the clocks jump back up to the max after several seconds. I have the msi afterburner that I use for overclocking and fan control, but this clock reduction still happens.

Second problem was when I got a Astropulse v505 task. The computer would freeze for periods of 10 seconds every few minutes or so, and the GPU usage was very low. It would not climb higher than 30%, and oftentimes would drop to 0% for up to 20 seconds.

I had to abort this task.

How do I solve these 2 problems?

in your app_info you'll want to add this "period_iteration 10" without the parrentheses to the cmdline.

I wonder if the problem is with BOINC backing off so you can watch the video. Does the WU countdown the same while the video is active?

For AstroPulse one should use block and fetch parameters as described in app release notes, number of period iterations param is used for MultiBeam app.

What does this command actually do? I want to learn a bit about this stuff.

Also, do I need to tweak the other app?

Do I replace the current command-line entry entirely, or do I append to it?

This is what my xml file looks like now:
