With all the talk of cooling & noise I finally got around to upgrading the stock cooler on my i7-860. I noticed the cores were running at 99ºC sometimes. With it clocked down to 2.6GHz & the room temp at only 22º-23ºC. It is in an older case that doesn't have the best airflow. :/ So I ordered a Thermalright Venomous X RT. It arrived today and I installed it when I got home from work. For the past 90 minutes it's been running around 45ºC slightly tweaked up to 3GHz under full S@H load & HD content playing. I'll probably go for 4GHz at some point, but for now it's fine. The only sound I hear now is the cooling fan in my TV. With the TV off it is hard to tell if the machine is on or not. So I'd say 60 bucks well spent. If I get a case with better ventilation later I am sure it will do a bit better. HAL9000 I'm very impressed to here you can hardly hear your CPU fan anymore. The closest I can find to your Thermalright Venomous X RT is a Cogage (Thermalright) ARROW CPU Heatsink and Fan for Intel Socket 775/1156/1366 for $123.05NZD $92.26USD. Out of interest what type of ram are you using & at what speed is it? |

Out of interest what type of ram are you using & at what speed is it? I am very happy with the setup. I was also considering the MUX-120 from Thermalright. However I opted for the bigest thing that would fit in the case. lol The arrow is just to large for my MB & case, or I probably would have gotten it. Here they sell it with 2 140mm fans for as low as $80. I have never used a fan from Thermalright before. Normally I just get a heat sink from them and use Nexus fans, but this one came with a fancy plastic mounting bracket. So I paid the $10 more to get it with the fan. Which seems to be on par with the Nexus case fan I have in the same system. If you haven't heard of Nexus here is their site. I first heard about them from Silent PC Review, which as the name implies, tests products for their silentness. I only have dual channel on my 860 but the kit I got for it is XMS3 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C8). I use the XMP settings where it runs at 1600 8-8-8-24. Hi comunity, I'm *thinking* of building a new system. To more than likley replace my current I7 980X. (Partly because of cpu noise due to running at 100% & I want faster ram.) Thought why not think about upgrading. I'm looking for weather you guys think this is a good build. Will be used for everday use, Boinc & gaming mainly racing & flying. @Speedy Way too much money you can get similar hardware from Amazon with in about 1500-2000 USD or maybe even less I would shop around more for better prices. |

Hi PaulDHarris, That price was getting all parts from the same place. I'm going to stick with my I7 980X & get a Prolimatech Super MegaCPU cooler & a 3x4 kit of Patriot DDR3-2000 Viper Extreme Series Sector 7 Edition 12GB Kit (3x 4GB), CL8. Currently using 6x2 Kingston 1333 |

Hi PaulDHarris, @speedy How much will the cooler and memory cost you. Sounds like a more reasonable idea there should be way less than 2 grand probally about 2 hundred. |

Hi PaulDHarris, Will let you know when I've done it. Round $400 NZD may be cheaper. |

I'm buiding a i7-2600 system with 2 EAH5870, on an INTEL (BOXDP67BGB3) DP67BG, 2 HDDs, 1 DVD (Burner) and a Coolermaster case and 1000Watt PSU, also Coolermaster. Forgot the DDR3 memory, 2 Channel, 2x 4GiG or 4x 2GiG, don't know yet. I already have the Coolermaster case and 1x EAH5870, the other parts cost me ~€450,00 a bit more then we agreed on.(PC & Parts Company). Will take some time to put everything together, having only 1 useble eye. (I can't see 3 dimensions!) When it's Up & Running, WIN XP64 or WIN 7(64bit), I'll post some photo's of my crunchers and some (technical) data..... |

From what I've seen you should be really happy with that 2600 machine, they are pretty powerful! Congrats! Traveling through space at ~67,000mph! |
