I have recently upgraded to ver 6.10.58. I see constant network activity that relates to BOINC, either the manager or in some cases to Rosetta. BOINC is running on a laptop that is used as a statinary PC, always on the internet, anways with external power. OS is Windows Vista Home. I have tried to uninstall BOINC, without deleting data. I has not changed the situation. The second problem is that I would prefere to completely uninstall BOINC and data, but without loosing the workunits completed. For some reason BOINC ignores my setting of "don't fetch more Work units", but happily reports completed WUs and fetch more WU. Any clues on what the problem is and any cure to fix it. Chr. I have tried to uninstall BOINC, without deleting data. It has not changed the situation. So BOINC is innocent - some other program is communicating (e.g. Skype, uTorrent, Bonjour http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonjour_(software) ) Or maybe you see the internal (in-the-computer, localhost) communication between BOINC Manager (boincmgr.exe) and boinc.exe ? The second problem is that I would prefere to completely uninstall BOINC and data, but without loosing the workunits completed. What do you mean? Report completed tasks (press [Update]) before uninstalling. For some reason BOINC ignores my setting of "don't fetch more Work units", but happily reports completed WUs and fetch more WU. You have to press [No new tasks] for every project listed in Projects tab. Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

Note that the buttons say what will happen when you push them, NOT what the current state. So, if it says No New Tasks, that means that currently work fetch is allowed. BOINC WIKI |

Sorry to have to say that I was imprecise in my description. It should have said “reinstalling†BOING, not uninstalling. Running BOING – network traffic Uninstalled BOINC – NO network traffic Reinstalled BOINC - network traffic I checked that is was boinc and boincmgr that caused the traffic using advanced system monitoring from Windows Control panel. (job list is not able to show the information) The hint to press the button when it states Don’t fetch new work (or whatever it says in English, I run the Danish version) was useful. Now I will wait for the to active WU to complete and then complete remove all BOINC and try ti install from scratch. If that does not help. I will reinstall the computer completely and maybe downgrade BOINC to an earlier version that did not cause the problem. Thank You for the input. |

Running BOING – network traffic No need to Uninstall - just Exit BOINC to check. "network traffic"?? - I don't think so - try to pull the network LAN cable (or stop Wi-Fi) - the "network traffic" will continue! This is not traffic to outside world - it is inside the computer (and perfectly normal and by design for all BOINC versions) BOINC communicates to outside world only a few times per day for a few seconds! Maybe even less (one time per day) for your type of CPUs which do about 2 tasks a day: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/hosts_user.php?userid=392182 You can see all the real communication in the Messages tab. What Bill is trying to say is that it is normal to see this "network activity". BOINC consist of several parts that all communicate to each other through a TCP port (31416). That communicating is what you see, usually in some 3rd party firewall. These communications aren't going out onto the internet, they stay on your computer. |

OK a slight longer description: BOINC Mangager (BOINC_mgr.exe) calls the BOINC daemon (boinc.exe) through port 31416 on the local loopback address (127.0.0.0 - IPV4 or ::1 - IPV6). The calls are done this way to make remote control of all of your computers possible. The side effect is that some firewalls report this as network activity even though there are no bits leaving the machine. To confirm this, download Wire Shark and look to see what the endpoints are for all this communication. You will notice that it is all on your local computer. IMHO firewalls that mark local communication as network communication are broken. BOINC WIKI |

Thank you for the feedback. I have reinstalled BOINC completely, including renaming the datafolder. I will just continue using the present version, I just wanted to make sure that nothing is wrong with BOINC and the no other program was using the program as a cover doing nasty things. The "problem" was discovered when I changed to ZoneAlarm firewall, which marks the traffic in BOINC as network activity. PC Tools firewall does not. Sorry for bothering you with the misunderstanding. Kind regards Christian Weithoeft |

Thank you for the feedback. I have reinstalled BOINC completely, including renaming the datafolder. ZA rears its ugly head again. I did think of one other setting that might be causing this. In the advanced view, Activity menu, there is a network section. If you are basing the network use on a schedule, you have to have this set to "based on preferences". If you are disabling it by hand, you need to switch between "always" and "never". BOINC WIKI |
