I am new here, just signed up, downloaded and started running SETI. Is there any sound--can I hear what I am listening to. Or am I not really listening, just letting some group use my computers CPU for calculations? thanks for any advice. |

Please see Learn more about how SETI@home works for a lot of that information. If you want to get an idea of what the sound would be, take a radio, put on the Mid wave or Long wave band and dial to between stations. That white noise that you hear is what one will hear when listening to the tasks. Not nearly as pleasant as Rihanna. ;-) |

Btw, do you experience any distortion on radio signal sometimes? Lately I'm getting funny sounds coming out of my radio. Something like two stations in one channel. __________ Hair salon? Here: Afro Salon |

What SETI is searching for is some form of coherent signal in a vast area of space filled with what appears to be white noise but hopefully with some pink noise in there someplace. There really isn't anything to listen to audibly that would interest you very long. Just turn on an old analog TV set and tune off channel and that is what it sounds like. I think the previous post said the same thing. We're searching using our best most likely understanding but we might just be looking the wrong way. If you've ever looked at a stream without polarized sunglasses on and then put a pair on and you can now see the fish and the stream bottom that is what we are doing.. SETI is taking that noise and attempting to filter and make some coherent sense out of a digital mish mash of essentially white noise. No one knows if our idea of how we're processing the signal is actually efective but it is science's best guess at this time... Stay aboard and give us a hand... Never engage stupid people at their level, they then have the home court advantage..... |

searching for some sort of signal of intell is best to study our own signals first. reason for this is to understand the chaos involved in detecting digital, analog, signals as applied to am,fm, upper, lower and or double side bands. and most important question of all to ask your self is this. why would a highly intellectual with great technology from another universe would want to communicate with a planet of back stabbing warmongering diseased minded so called intelligent oil burning race of beings whose only excuse for trashing ones own back yard is ,''BECAUSE'',. lets face this possibility and move on. I myself would like to know ''who really out there''. by the way, white noise hash really is the way to go deaf. I prefer cousin Brucie on satellite 60's on 6. thank for the read. Duane1352 |

To Duane Once you get cancer or get an uncurable disease, with no chance of living more than 6 months. Maybe you will reconsider your stance on the whole situation. Just a question, but how much is spend per year on research of curing all kinds of things we know nonthing about. From my point of view, this is effective research that does not cost billions of dollars. If we do not find anything, oh well, it is still much cheaper than the BILLIONS of dollars thrown at researching cures that have not had any breaking develoments. I would really like someone to jump in, if they actually know the amount of money that has been spent to cure cancer over the years. I think billions is almost to low? That's just my stance on the situation. I would really like to think that others are out there and that once our worlds meet, we would complement each other and stop all the things you are complaining about. But that's just me. P.S. Before you start trashing what others have worked many years for, maybe you should read and learn before you speak. Considering you have only been here for, what 3-4 days! |

"The Signal" we search for is not necessarily send to us and not necessarily send intentionally - we may catch some "ETI-leaks" not meant to reach us (of course if "they" still use radio waves with "proper" (Hydrogen) frequency (and not some Tachyon ... hm, "thing")).
