The down time seems to cause more problem. people store like squirels until the fri switch on then swamp the up load server, too many high powered pc's feedding it we will just have to hope things get better |

The down time seems to cause more problem. people store like squirels until the fri switch on then swamp the up load server, too many high powered pc's feedding it we will just have to hope things get better I've been wondering the same thing. It's clear that people have tweaked their settings so that they have sufficient work to carry them over the downtime , plus some additional work so they don't run dry. All of these systems have a large number of results to post and when the servers come back on-line there has got to be some choke factor occurring which could easily spiral out of control. I assume that the project down-time was established to allow for maintenance but the distributed processing approach of BOINC doesn't foresee any system down-time it just crunches, stuffs, and requests work. I work three projects. SETI@Home, Einstein@home and LHC@home. LCH has my highest priority but since it has almost zero work most of the crunching I do is on SETI and Einstein. When SETI goes into down-time and I run dry of work then Einstein gets my full attention. Since most of the work from SETI is cuda I allow both CPU and cuda work for SETI. Einstein will also use cuda but they create large work units (or they use to) so I only run CPU work from Einstein. This keep Einstein from capturing the system with long running WU and excluding SETI work. This seems to work best for me. Just thought I'd let people know. |

I agree that running multiple projects will get rid of most of your frustration. To get rid of all your frustration with S@H/BOINC, stop looking at your list of tasks and stats every 5 minutes. Do it once or twice a week, and you'll be much happier. And you will get just as much work done. |

I don't want to run multiple projects!! I gave up on them. I want to help find ET. Oh well I find I no longer care, I have approx 250 ghost WU's and 600 waiting to report. Good time to detach from the project I suspect. |

I find it to be an interesting observation that the folks who seem to be the most dedicated to S@H, to the point of adamantly refusing to crunch other projects, are often the ones who quickly get frustrated and end up leaving S@H because of the problems. Yet the other folks who have no problem crunching for other projects seem to get less frustrated, and are more likely to hang in there through the scheduled and unscheduled downtimes. This is not to say there's anything bad about wanting to crunch only for Seti. That's a personal decision that everyone's entitled to. I just don't plan on seeing those folks around for very long. |

With Seti being down ALL week. Should they have not seen this problem coming? |

I started with SETI 1999 because I wanted to help find ET, I built crunchers just for SETI. I was suspected of having cancer last year so I joined the WCG. However much as I tried to get involved with these other projects my heart belongs to SETI. I stopped crunching last year for personal reasons, but I didn't get rid of my machines. I still want to find ET, but looking at the evidence I think CUDA has probably been more than the project can handle. There are many machines out there turning in massive results everyday with previously unthinkable RAC's. Perhaps it is time to scale back. I have just spent about £100($157) on CUDA capable graphics cards but perhaps I was not looking at the projects best interests. I will disable these cards and just crunch on the CPU. Makes more sense. Bernie. PS. Perhaps the original is the best, SETI@HOME was the first distributed computing project so perhaps some of us feel more strongly!! We get a bit heated when "our project" doesn't perform. I ain't going anywhere :-) |

With Seti being down ALL week. Should they have not seen this problem coming? They did, that's why we had the fund raiser to get them the new server. We just didn't get it there in time! :-( PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

How is doing less science going to help the science project? It's not time to scale back, it's time to increase the infrastructure and capabilities of the SETI systems. They're getting a shiny new server very soon, which is a good step in this direction. In the meantime, there's no possible way that processing data for other projects is going to harm your participation in SETI. |

As I understand there are results going back years that have not been analysed, hence the 3 day outage. So the more we crunch the longer the outage will need to be for them to catch up :-) Why would I believe that processing other projects will "harm" my participation in SETI@HOME, I just have no intrest in any other projects, I want the project I originally signed up for in 1999 to work. Simples! |

We are a part of it, and progress is moving forward, not backwards. If the infrastructure needs to be expanded, then lets find a way to do it. We found ways to increase the capacity of our rigs, now the front end at Berkely is doing the same thing. Growing pains are not bad. :) Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Not quite right Bernie, They have been working on nitpkr for awhile but just recently got it running to where they could start processing work. Once they get it running full out things should go pretty quick. What they need the time for right now is to get it running right. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

How many month's of limited shutdowns & screw up weekends is ENOUGH They should concentrate on making it work for now They are getting a new SUPER server we paid for as soon as they can get the time to get it Why keep messing with what will change NEXT month anyway I think it's EXTREMELY short sited |

"we are in a search that may take thousands of years" ... considering the progress technology is going to make in that timeframe I suddenly felt like one of the pyramid builders with my wooden hammer and copper chisel. Maybe we should just wait a couple hundered years and then find ET within minutes of searching. Maybe this is just a gigantic waste of energy ? But you are right... being part of it, that is what makes the difference, at least for me, but I am not as enthusiastic about it anymore as I was in the beginning. If I need my comps for something else I am not in a hurry because I would loose some RAC, and if they run out of SETI work oh well, so be it, and yes, I exclusively support SETI and all the other projects are worthless anyway, so there I said it :P go flame me now. |

During times of extended outages I tend to post things for a reaction! It's interesting to see how people feel. Naughty me :-0 Bernie |

Well, you and I are still here Robert, so I guess it is not enough yet.
I think they are. These things take time.
I'm sure this will help, for a while. But I don't expect it to fix everything for ever. Development marchs on, us users will bog this new one down in some finite period of time.
Everything will change next month, not just S@H. And then change again the month after that. Us old guys need to get used to it. |

Well folks....... Help IS on the way..... According to Matt's last estimate, within about 3-4 weeks they should be getting Oscar, the new server, into the stable and ready to rock. I must confess to being one of those hardcore, crunch Seti only kinda guys. And I do get mildly wild when things are not humming along as they should be. But, I and a lotta other friends here just put our money where our mouth is and ponied up for that new server. So, you know the kittyman isn't going anywhere else either. If I trash talk once in a while because I am frustrated, it's just my sincere enthusiasm for the project coming to the surface. I think you all know that now. Meow meow. I have to try to be fair. Mistakes have been made. But so has progress. Since they went to the 3 down 4 up strategy things have until recently been MUCH smoother. Back in May/June there were scheduled 1 day reality 4 day followed by a 24 hour half up followed by a crash.. Things (other than the constantly increasing waiting to validate stash) have been going along pretty darned good. People had work to do, made some adjustments and compensated. Right now.. there are indeed "growing pains". There are likely to be more in the next month or so. The lab is really showing an effort to try and keep us updated. This is a HUGE difference in what I walked into when I started crunching a few months ago. But it is not trouble free, and it will not be trouble free. Honestly. But I do not regret the donations to help things continue to move forward. Right now everyone is frustrated and most are a bit grouchy. But please keep in mind that everyone that is here wants to try and help find ET. You are among friends in the same boat, IF you take a deep breath and remember that.. we can make it through this down time. And the next one. Janice |
