Probably a corrupted download. Delete the downloaded file, and ALL of the caches of it and try the download again. Unfortunately Windows has the habit of caching internet files and not letting you easily delete those caches. You have to go searching.

BTW, the error message was very hard to read from your image hosting site. Most of these sites reduce the size of the images which makes reading text difficult.

See the options in this FAQ.

By the way, there is a 64bit client... Download page. You're also not trying to update an already 64bit version of the client with the 32bit version, are you? As that will not work.

64bit BOINC will install its program files to default C:\Program Files\BOINC\
32bit BOINC will install its program files to default C:\Program Files(x86)\BOINC\, but for if you already have a 64bit client installed as then it will use the old path. But you cannot install 32bit programs to the C:\Program Files\ directory.

Reinstall the EXACT version that you are installing over. Old versions are available at http://boinc.ssl.berkeley.edu. Then install the new version. This sometimes works.

You did check the options in this FAQ? Please read all the options therein before doing any of them. Don't just discard it as the error on one of them is different than the one you see.

Is this a fresh installation of BOINC, on a completely fresh installation of Windows, or is this an upgrade installation of BOINC? If it's an upgrade, which version did you have on the system before?

If you haven't deleted the registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup yet, check in it what the installation paths are for the BOINC and BOINC Data directories.

Anything in those paths?

What happens when you delete the registry path, as it says to do in that FAQ?

What if you do a system restore to a point before you started to try to install BOINC? As each time you try to install something, a restore point is made.

You have to find the place where the Windows uninstaller has squirreled away its link to the MSI file. That is under the windows uninstaller, NOT Space Sciences.

That someone was me as well. ;-)

Checking my registry, I see that BOINC.msi lives at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\EFA63CBFB97294243A790E783A253E3E\SourceList

You could do a search in your registry for BOINC.msi and delete that key. (So in the case of my install, that would be the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\EFA63CBFB97294243A790E783A253E3E. Your key will differ).

Unfortunately the string is different at least for every single version of BOINC, possibly every install. Start a search for BOINC at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products. That should find it fairly quickly.

You may need to do the search from an admin account.
