I've installed and remove BOINC/SETI three times since I moved to Windows 7 64 bit OS and each time it has made my computer unusable. Even when all but idle processing is allowed, it makes every click on every other application take 2 seconds or so to respond. The mouse cursor moves with more than noticable drag and I end up having to uninstall the software to get back to normal operation. Has anyone else encountered this and fixed it? Thanks, system info below... OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600 Other OS Description Not Available OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Name XPS8000-PC System Manufacturer Dell Inc. First, are you absolutely the effective setting was to not compute except during idle time? 1) Local settings override the version set from the web. If you have EVER clicked OK on the local settings page, all of those settings should be set locally rather on the web interface. 2) If you set the settings in the web interface through the project, you must click update in on the local computer before the settings are downloaded to the computer. You can always check the effective settings Advanced View -> Advanced menu -> Options. Make certain to click cancel when exiting. How much RAM do you have? BOINC WIKI |

Too bad your system isn't showing in your list of computers. But if it's anything like this one, then the slowing down of the mouse is easily explained: Your Nvidia GTX260 is being used to do work with. If you do not want that to happen, pass by your preferences (those I link to are here in your account, on the web site. Or if you use the local advanced preferences, BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Preferences and check the "Use GPU while computer is idle" option) and disable the use of the Nvidia GPU to do work with while the computer is being used. Also set the project preferences NOT to use the Nvidia GPU. Do note that you will have to set this specific preference at all the projects you are attached to. There is no 'global' preference for that. And um... uninstalling the software to get to use your computer? Why not just Exit BOINC? (File->Exit in BOINC Manager) |

My system is rather similar as yours. It's an Dell XPS 8100, I7, GTX260, Win7 x64. I haven't had any problems, even running GPU while doing other stuff works OK, there's only a very little noticeable affect. |

I recently switched to Windows 7 32 bit and also have occasional serious problems with my mouse. It become *VERY* jerky and slows WAAAAYYYYY down almost to the point of being unusable. Putting BOINC on "snooze" fixes the problem. I also use a program called SYNERGY that allows me to use the same keyboard and mouse on computers hooked to the same network, and running BOINC slows down the mouse considerably on the other networked computers. I'm running dual nVidia G-Force 8800 video cards, 4 GB of RAM and a Quad Core CPU. Never had this problem until updating to WIN 7. I have another system running 64 bit Windows with a Quad Core CPU and it runs fine. At least no problems that I've noticed. I"ve checked and unchecked the "use GPU . . . " option as well as the option to use while the computer is in use, to no avail. Makes no difference what either setting is as best I can tell. I resort to "snooze" while I'm using the computer. ..........Bob |

I"ve checked and unchecked the "use GPU . . . " option as well as the option to use while the computer is in use, to no avail. Makes no difference what either setting is as best I can tell. Make sure your computer is set to run based on preferences, when using those preferences. Also make sure that you set those preferences in the correct place. If for instance you set them on the web-site, while you use the local preferences, then do know that the local preferences override the web preferences. You will have to set these preferences in BOINC Manager then. I resort to "snooze" while I'm using the computer. Snooze only works for one hour. Better to use the exclusive app and exclusive GPU app options in a core client configuration file. See this FAQ for a lot of information. |
