Boy I hope anyone who lives above the 45th parallel had clear skies last night. The northern lights were spectacular! It was one of the best displays that I have seen for years this far south. There is a great chance that it will be over the top again tonight. I am going to try to see if I can get some pix with my old camera telescope set up.

The grey-clad old sailor drops a handful of golden Presidents into the cigar box.
Donning his Chaplain's cap, he steps to the line and raises his glass.

Tomorrow we will interrupt our preparations for Independence Day celebrations to honor a fallen Hero.
Lance Corporal Jared C. Verbeek, USMC, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Camp Pendleton, Ca.) received his Final Orders, and transferred to the Staff of the Supreme Commander on 21 June 2011, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Lcpl Verbeek was 22 years old, and leaves behind a wife, an 18-month old son, and a large extended family.

I was present, along with other local Veterans, the Patriot Guard and American Legion Riders, and his family, when his body arrived at NAS Lemoore on Wednesday afternoon. People from two counties turned out to line the route and welcome him home. Tomorrow we will muster at the church, then at the Visalia cemetery, to render Final Honors to our Departed Comrade and Shipmate, and lay him to rest.

We raise our glass to you, Lcpl Verbeek. We thank you for your service, and your sacrifice. May God's grace ease the pain of loss and separation felt by your family and Comrades. And may your death not be in vain.

Bon Voyage, Shipmate. Semper Fideles, Marine!

our friend is AC deprived and asked for me to post in her stead:

"Due to a failure of central(and all other) Air conditioning, I have shut down and I am unable
to
1: crunch for a bit
2: be online much
3: stay at a reasonable temperature level (indoors 83F and climbing, GPU's were hititng approx 1 degree Celcius per 1 degree interior Farenheit). I am turning things off for a while
until I can get some cooling in here.

And a speedy repair of your A/C, and a speedy return to us here.

It is always the perfect temperature in Callahans. Especially after you get a drink or three in you!

I assure you, the feathered kind can not sweat.

Somebody else can have my next drink - or the table might become an attractive spot for dancing.

Phud, old friend, when I get these upgrades done, I'm going to pop into the Playhouse over across the bridge in Iowa. All I have is 3 rolls of quarters. Any chance I could buy some of them singles? Those Playhouse pole dancers get fussy when you pelt 'em with coinage.
