I have been having the same problem with screen freezes for several months. It happens also when I move my mouse to use my computer while the SETI screen saver program is running. It is very frustrating because the only way to access my computer is to shut it completely down by unplugging it and then restarting.

the simple solution is to turn off the screen saver. Even though it may be interesting to watch you really don't need it.

So what you mean is there's no solution? That your only suggestion is to either tolerate the freezes or withdraw membership from BOINC?
Please keep in mind that I am not computer literate. Please make all answers the best layman's terms you have.

The screen saver is not really doing anything, it is not necessary to use it to crunch for SETI.

I updated to the latest version of BOINC last week, but this problem has been going on for the last few months, even before I went out of town from May to mid-June and had it switched off the whole time.

I don't know what "allow all users to control" means. There's only one user on my computer. And what's "protected"?

OK, there are three check boxes on the second screen. What did you set them to?

It's on the third screen and you can only edit them after clicking Advanced...
