I wonder how do you find that the files are corrupted? What did you do and what happened? E.g. you can't edit user_info.sah with Notepad - after you save it the format will not be what SETI@home.exe expected: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=59278&nowrap=true#994205 If that is the case put the fake user_info.sah from "my" package in SETI@home directory, put some Classic work_unit.sah and try again. There were bad sectors on the HD and the data/sectors were too corrupted or unreadable to be salvaged. I tried using the HD repair tool from my System Mechanic Professional but no joy. I'll keep looking..maybe I'll get lucky and find something on one of the +/-10 old HDs I have kicking around. I've checked 3 others over the past couple days and 1 couldn't be read - FAT must have died or something. The second sounded like the backgroud track to a techno song as it was clunking, clacking and thumping so much! That HD couldn't be read either. The third only had DOS 6.22 and Win3.11 installed :) Cheers, Brent "All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered;the point is to discover them." Another (off-topic) question related to the reliability of HDD drives: Which of (your old) drives fail and which are good? Brand, size, age, problem? (What brand of HDD you will buy in the future and which - no?) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

It is your thread and you can let it wander if you wish. Eventually it will get back on topic ;) Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

Like one of my friends like to say - They are two kinds of HDD-s, one are broken, the other are going to be broken, just waiting :) Last problematic HDDs were from Seagate, there was a problem with the firmware and the HDD dies after 1-2 weeks work . It was on the 7200.10 model if i remember , but they provide free firmware update so it is fix nowdays :) Dell XPS L702x smokin' weed and searching for aliens .... ;] TRUSTNO1 |

I found that Seagate 7200.11's are the worst out there for reliability atm (the modern day equivalent of old Maxtor, IMB and early Hitachi drives) eclipsing 7200.10's but you may like to read this article http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hdd-reliability-storelab,2681.html based on data from Storlab in Russia. I have had good luck with Seagate 7200.9 drives, but everything newer's been a bit flaky. Don't get me started on Seagate's previous-generation 500 GB laptop drive. GRRRR. I'm glad my Mac has a Time Capsule backup. On the other hand, the only Western Digital drives I've had blow up on me have been very, very old. I need to remember this when I buy new drives, they seem to be worth the extra few bucks. Of course, your best bet (especially if running Windows 7) is to just buy a SSD. No moving parts to break, some of them are insanely fast. There's a 128 GB one that is very fast going for under $400 Canadian - it's incredibly tempting, but since I have very little money at the moment anyway (hooray buying a condo) I guess I'll wait until the 256 GB models come down to that price point. |

I've been using WD drives for over 10yrs now and I've yet to have 1 fail on me but then I build systems where they always get plenty of ventilation though I can't say the same for any other manufacturer that I've worked with/used. Cheers. |
