OMG, shock, horror - Martin, don't you go having a heart attack. That will also stream the files over your network to devices that can play off of a network media server. I use ps3mediaserver for serving up video to my houses devices, but have heard decent things about xbmc, and I know it can even be used on linux. :-) ____________ -Dave #2

Yep, & you can also use it with openELEC 2.0 to build a dedicated media server without the need for a full blown O/S (Linux based of course).

There's the rather interesting Raspbmc that turns a RasPi into a low power but very capable XBMC media centre.

And by the power of FLOSS, you can now run BOINC on Android devices: I have an android freed up finally too! I just need to make sure my arch is supported, as IIRC that particular device has a strange proc.. ____________ -Dave #2

This could rightly be posted in any of the 3 threads regarding software & technolgy, but thought the Linux thread would be more appropriate.

Ubuntu operating system comes to Android smartphones Thanks for that, quite a splash: ... Ubuntu [Linux] ... devices to be sold with the system pre-installed within the year. While he acknowledged the innovation would likely be limited to "enthusiasts and hobbyists" at first, he said it signalled a wider shift on the horizon. "It's quite incredible that we're at this point when the power of the phone is crossing over that with baseline processing power of basic laptops," Mr Shuttleworth told the BBC. "We're taking advantage of that so for the first time in history you have the full consumer PC platform available on a phone. ... "... It's really cracking to do that ahead of everyone else." Phones running the software will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. ... There's also great enthusiasm from: The Register: Ubuntu for smartphones aims to replace today's mobes, laptops PCMAG: Canonical Unveils Ubuntu for Smartphones There is also the Google phone... And now for something completely different. By switching from Windows to its own Linux distribution, LiMux, Munich has saved over ¬11 million (US$14.3 million) so far, the city announced in November. But a Microsoft-commissioned Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) study conducted by HP suggests that the city's numbers are wrong, and claims that Munich would have saved ¬43.7 million if it had stuck with Microsoft, German weekly Focus reported earlier this week. Microsoft won't release study that challenged success of Munich's Linux migration ____________ -Dave #2

And now for something completely different. Thanks for that one. I like the quote from the source article: ... Since the report was commissioned by Microsoft, HP also declined to comment, said Anette Nachbar, spokeswoman for HP. "I would struggle to see how a Windows deployment would be cheaper than a Linux installment," said Roy Illsley, principal analyst at Ovum, who added that he couldn't imagine why Microsoft wouldn't release a study that actually proved that Microsoft is cheaper than Linux. "I would suspect that they read it and they suspected that there are some errors in there," he said. ... Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... IT is what we make it... Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... The study was commissioned by Microsoft to HP Consulting for internal purposes only What dirty trick? Never was released except by a disgruntled employee. ____________

Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... So the FUD headlines are just a ruse by sensationalist publishers? Or really is that FUD being slung around to try to confuse and discredit a big success story for FLOSS and real standards? YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... That all looks all the worst against the excessive costs and restrictions of proprietary and lock-in... IT is what we make it... YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... Just clicked to "read full story" on the link in Ex's post which leads to http://www.itworld.com/open-source/337658/microsoft-wont-release-study-challenged-success-munichs-linux-migration You have to watch out for sensationalist media FUD. Expect it. It is how they sell advertising. ____________

YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... Including deliberate deception? Microsoft partly releases study on Munich's Linux migration ... The likely reason for this is an assumption by HP that Munich's administration would still be using Windows XP and Office 2003 if Munich had decided to go with Microsoft products; Munich's calculations, on the other hand, include an upgrade to Windows 7. As the head of the City of Munich's municipal IT service IT@M, Karl-Heinz Schneider, pointed out last week, the Linux version used with LiMux has continually evolved and is now comparable to Windows 7. It is rather unrealistic to assume that the city would have stayed on Windows XP throughout the lifetime of the migration, instead of updating to a current version of Microsoft's operating system at some point. The [Microsoft/HP] study contains other debatable assumptions... All spiced up with drip-fed teasers to get just the glib misleading FUD headline out into the wild?... All scurrilously dishonest in my opinion! IT is what we make it... Martin ____________ Mandriva Linux A user friendly OS! See new freedom Mageia2 The Future is what We make IT (GPLv3)

Martin, Can't you read? Questioning the City of Munich's figures by quoting a non-public study that could not be verified has sparked considerable criticism. Most likely it is in response to this that Microsoft has now released a summary of the study. That is exactly with the disgruntled one wanted. Release of internal documents to embarrass. What might matter is what they did with the damn thing. Just file it as claptrap? ____________

... What might matter is what they did with the damn thing. Just file it as claptrap? So... Why pay to create a report that is so blatantly (deliberately?) deceitfully biased in the first place if it is not to be used in some way...? Or are you suggesting that the Microsoft/HP people are hopelessly incompetent? Or just that they had no other way to cook the numbers to try to get Microsoft to look good?... All very strange to my eyes... All just my opinion as always... ;-) IT is what we make it... Martin ____________ Mandriva Linux A user friendly OS!
