Are GTX 280's decent cards or do they run hot? I saw one for a good deal and wondered how they stack up against say a GTX 275? Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound! |

i think this is because gtx 280 has double previous manufacturing process of 65 nm and consumes 236 watts instead of gtx 285's 204 watts and slower by 14%. btw, if you type "GTX" in russian keyboard layout, you will get russian world what can be translated as "furnace" which is reflect it's power consumption . so many russian gtx user call it "furnace 285" or "furnace 295" for fun. |

I found the 280 for $180 and a 275 for $235, I am wondering which is better for seti. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound! |

The 280 was the first of the current generation of nVidia GPUs. The 275 came out about 10 months later. According to Wikipedia, at non-OC cloak rates the 280 is about 10% slower than a 275, and draws about 10% more power. 275, 280, and 285 are fairly close together in terms of speed and power. All of them are excellent GPUs, and are currently only surpassed by the 295, which is essentially two 285's on a single card. With the fan on auto, my factory overclocked 280 crunches at around 77 to 82 degrees, depending on the project (SETI is at the low end of that range). My PC is not in a good spot for dissipating heat so it runs a bit hotter than it really aught to. The 280's maximum safe temperature is 105, so there's a lot of thermal leeway. The highest temps, running Milkyway, have the GPU running above 90%, so even with the GPU being pushed hard, it's getting nowhere near hot enough to be a problem. So for the price difference the 280 is a better deal. Also I believe the GTX 295 is 2 GTX 275's not 285's. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound! |

So for the price difference the 280 is a better deal. it depends on your current price for electric power. 285 are 30% more effective in performance/power ratio when 280. |

So for the price difference the 280 is a better deal. Thats one place I am lucky, we have the cheapest power in the State. But my choices are the 275 or 280 and will probably have to get one or the other tonight. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound! |

Sorry but You and Michael Goetz are both wrong, a GTX 295 is really a pair of GTX 260 gpus(Remember I own a BFG GTX 295, the two board version), the real 295 is not be confused with the Asus Mars card with two 285 gpus which Nvidia didn't authorize and that's why their so rare and the Asus Mars card is not a GTX 295 at all. Me If I had three of these, I'd call them the Mars Division, Real Gods of War. :D The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

we have the cheapest power in the State I pay RESIDENTIAL 5.4 cents per KWH plus a $5.50 monthly service charge But I am more concerned which will do more units, starting to think the 275 because of the faster speeds and little difference in memory. Are GTX 280's decent cards or do they run hot? I saw one for a good deal and wondered how they stack up against say a GTX 275? Hi there! I've got a GTX 280 (overclocked by MSI) and the temperatur is fine running the fan at 70-80% at crunching and it's around 60°C. I have to say, I'm using driver: 18618 and newer drivers lower the temperatur slightly. If you decide to buy a GTX 280 I suggest to put "GTX280 PSU" into your prefered search engine. Some problems have been noticed with BeQuiet PSUs. I'm having problems with GPUGrid for example. If you find a good deal, it's realy a good card. Best wishes. During browsing berkeley's homepage I came along this statement that makes me say: "ME!, ME!, ME!, wants to know, what patch was used and is it available for windows?" |

Since they were only quoted as making 1000 of them, No idea, But then I have no idea if any were made beyond the one pictured as Nvidia didn't authorize the idea and may have threatened to cut off Asus supply of chips If Asus made anymore of them and I'd heard about them back in May of 2009 and then I heard nothing more on the cards. Oh and Luke, Until Fermi is released and more importantly for sale, the Fermi is just so much vaporware. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
