They are also ASCII and line based. You best bet at finding a compendium would be to look through Usenet and IRC archives, since the Emoticons were pretty much spawned there. This looks like a reasonable place to start : http://ditwww.epfl.ch/SIC/SA/News/Smiley.html "Modern" geek culture has seen more influence from Japan and its Manga crowd so at some point you will notice a tendency to move away from the left-to-right, tilt-your-head smilies like the everpresent :) and :o in favor of top-to-bottom stuff like ^_^ . It's more like tongue-in-cheek, standing for humour or sarcasm.
