"Smilies", or Emoticons, are pretty old. They are also ASCII and line based. You best bet at finding a compendium would be to look through Usenet and IRC archives, since the Emoticons were pretty much spawned there.

This looks like a reasonable place to start :
http://ditwww.epfl.ch/SIC/SA/News/Smiley.html

"Modern" geek culture has seen more influence from Japan and its Manga crowd so at some point you will notice a tendency to move away from the left-to-right, tilt-your-head smilies like the everpresent :) and :o in favor of top-to-bottom stuff like ^_^ . Unicode also opened up the floodgates.

I just realised there is a wiki, saying pretty much what I was typing here, so I'll just http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_emoticons .

That would be offensive ("you are silly"), at least where I live. It's more like tongue-in-cheek, standing for humour or sarcasm.

See Wikipedia:
Tongue-in-cheek is a term used to refer to humor in which a statement, or an entire fictional work, is not meant to be taken seriously, but its sarcasm is subtle.
