It has taken the kitties years, not weeks, to reach over 42 million credits for this project.

And yes, I am proud of it. Done all with my rigs, in my home, on my tab. Not by signing up a bunch of friends, or corporate computers, or a school full of computers (not that there is anything wrong with those contributions either).

But I did this on my own.

If that makes me a braggart in your eyes Pappa, so be it.

And I do sport a star, Sir.

Good on you for donating Mark. Looks like you're the only one in the top 20 who has done so. Absolutely pathetic that there are not more. I think you can agree people in your realm have no reason not to donate, yes?

I will have my donation up before Christmas.

I made exactly that point about the biggest crunchers on the project not having stars in This post about 3 weeks ago.

Not sure many will agree but it seems to me that ALL of those in the top 100 do contribute significant amounts of money to the project. It may not be in the form of cash donations, but the contribution is made in cash regardless. For me to set up a rig like Vyper's/Seti's #1 host would cost $5000. It would also cost $150 a month to run in electricity bills. Where I come from, $5000 is much more than 99% of peoples monthly take home salary. If the project contributors wish to contribute through crunching alone, good on them. If I could put together $5000 for Seti, I would also do so in the form of hardware. If I had $5000 to donate to any cause, it would probably not be Seti.

All this is true and is considered to be donations to the project. However, it does not take into consideration the server equipment at Berkeley. What if that end were to shut down due to lack of manpower or funding? What then of your own investment? It make your own investment for naught wouldn't it?.

And a $10.00 star is too much to show they care???????

WTF.......where are the fish?

Too little time to do the deed?

My investment in this project is incalcuable..........

Dammit........I said it once, and I'll say it again......

Top users, show your damned stars...............................
Too lazy to do so? Or too afraid to be outed, as some have hinted at?

Why?

You got the $10.00.......

Take the time. And some pride in the project you crunch so loudly for.

Lemme see the stars..............

Is there not some way of making it a compulsory donation, say if you have over 25k RAC, by being throttled back down to something below 25k?

Why this discussion?

If someone is sad, because of his own RAC which is lower than others RAC?
If someone is jealous, because of others higher RAC?

If Siran d'Vel'nahr (the opener of this thread) would like to extend the thread rules to:
08. It's not allowed to post in this thread if your RAC is > 10,000.

Then I'll never again post here in this thread.

My nice RAC is not for nothing.
My both PCs take 1,080 W (1.08 kWh) out of the wall plug.
This are 2,220.- €/year. Current 3,310.- US$/year.
I bought equipment for 5,200.- € (7,750.- US$) only for SETI@home.

Yes - hmm.. I'm not proud - I'm happy to support my loved project with this high RAC.
I'm a normal hard working worker and have no big earnings - and for to pay this high electricity bill I give up other things.

A green star near the nick in this forum for 10.- US$ ?
This will help this project for continuously server uptime?

If you look to the top_user_list with green stars, mostly US people.
Why can the members only donate with credit card?
We europeans normally don't have and use credit cards, we use the EC card - so not possible to donate.

Sorry Siran d'Vel'nahr for to be offtopic with this post, but I thought I need to write my opinion.

EDIT:
Ohh.. yes.. ontopic.. 2,500. post in this forum!

Luke......

While at times it might seem to be a good way.....
It's not.

Boinc is a way of getting folks to donate computer time to their project of choice. Repeat.....their choice.

It's up to the benefactors of a specific project to support it or not.

Seti@Home has many supporters with their computing expertise.

They just need a few more that will pony up with their monetary resources.

And if you try to enforce a donation.....many would just dry up and go away.

It's hard enough to get those of use who feel strongly about the project to up the ante, much less those who could give a rat's ***.

Just hit the 50,000,000 mark....

You f'in braggart...........

LOL, of course....

Nice mark.......I am striving to hit the 50 mil mark myself in a number of weeks.
Benchmarks are all about what they mean to the people involved.

For some......100k might warrant a lifetime achievement award.
And that is a great thing.

It's just a measurement of where you are, and where you wish to go.
For some, it's a little bit at a time.
For some of us, the benchmarks are higher.

Nice one, Dude. A half a billion.......what a stone.

Hope to match you in a month or two.

It has been a long day and this is an old tough issue.

Way back when, when this thread started there were many things (BOINC, Seti Issues and many more) that made getting to a Milestone Important. It was Users Helping Other Users... In some respects those that are in the top 500, money aside have had questions answered and crawled over the tops of everyone elses back. The question then becomes what have YOU returned to the project?
I have seen most of the "standard" objections and know that a silient majority learn and move ahead as they can.
I also understand that some users quit because they can not compete. My old computer has been running faithfully for 4+ years and it does what it needs to do... They do not have all that money to spend. Keeping food on the table for the Family comes First. Seti was nice because, I thought I could help. But is seems what I can contribute is way less... So somewhere "WE" have to strike a balance.
Most of the Top 100 never post here... Most of the Top 1000 never post here... Why?
The ones that post here, are either proud of the accomplishment or bragging (for myself I am proud of my accomplishement). As I think about I have never seen NEZ brag, his work in Seti Beta has helped to insure the most trouble free Applications get here... How many others can say that?

If you want to brag, we can fix that with a New Thread. Then those that have reached the "impossible" goal can post. Then the proper "respect" is given here to those that deserve it. In most cases it has taken them Years! Not weeks...

Regards

Greetings Pappa,

Please see my PM to you, which I will send in a minute.

Thank you!

-----

My milestone: My team went over 1.5M a couple weeks ago. I am waiting for my next personal milestone of reaching 0.75M in SETI credit. I am currently maintaining a RAC above 1200

Keep on BOINCing! :)

As I have offended a few, I apologize.

I look at almost the very bottom of this thread and see Keith T who has been here since Aug 99 That was a Milestone.

Over the years you (and others) have did many things to Help Seti. Some of those things were spending time helping users understand how to make things work faster, better, stronger for Seti and then found ways to help keep the doors to Seti Open. Most of "your" journey has helped some many. That is striking a balance, I respect that.

So as far as Cuda machines are concerned, where does that put Keith T? Hopefully still crunching and when it time for his next Milestone he will brave the Mega Crunchers to State It!

Regards

Keith T and all others have their own milestones..........

Don't really mind if it's a thousand or a million, or a year or a minute.

They are what matters most to those who post. Simple things.

I too, have my faults........too often displayed.

Enough kvetching.........we are all brothers in this quest, are we not?

You are all dear to my heart.........

And even a single post from a lonely cruncher bears as much weight as mine.
I love you all.

3 Million Cobblestones for SETI@home.

Congratulation Samdani.

I too just breached 3,000,000 as a member of the ten year club and am still running my first SETI cruncher. I got it in 1995 and it has been crunching since Jun 3 1999. It's been through a few incarnations, Win95, RedHat5.2, WinNT4, WinXP Pro. It took 54 hours for a SETI Classic WU.

Thank you Mercer and congratulation from my side too. My first SETI computer was an AMD K6-2 450 Mhz with 3DNOW! Technology. It was perhaps the fastest thing around in 1999. I sent it to retirement in late 2003. It was averaging 35 hours per unit at that time :)

It went by and I almost missed it! A little bit over 10 years and finally hit 1,000,000. Just happened to look at the account page and saw it just a few minutes ago.

Happy Crunchin!
