Hello everyone, I'm new to this. A friend told me about it and I thought, "What the heck? I can share some computing power when I'm not using it!"

The reason for this post is to ask the difference between Astropulse v5.5.03 and SETI@home Encanced 6.08 (cuda) Applications.

The main thing I notice is that the Astropulse takes forever to crunch while the other finishes fairly quickly.

I've currently have 4 Astropulse jobs running. Two on my desktop and the other two on my laptop computer -- none of which will finish for at least 3 weeks.

My desktop is running the SETI@home Enhanced jobs as well....

I like the SETI@home jobs better. Call it... instant gratification. The jobs are much smaller. And sometimes it seems the deadlines on the Astropulse jobs are before the computation will even finish. So I worry I'll be donating my computer processing power for nothing.

Forgive me for not understanding... Well pretty much anything. I'd just like some guidance from ANYONE who knows about this more than I do.

I guess my biggest question is: Why do I get Astropulse jobs and my friend gets nothing but SETI@home Enanced jobs?

Thanks,

Cory

Have you checked your preferences in your account, maybe they are all ticked and if you want just MBs just leave that one ticked. Have you tried using an optimised version which will make these go quickly. My optimised Ap usually takes around 24 hrs to do. If you do want these checked other messages in the forum.

Astropulse is searching different things than Multibeam. Each one is still searching for signals, just differently.

As Madmac stated, there are home brewed (actually somewhat with the help of the developers) optimized applications. They do save a lot of time. If you are willing to read through the documentation and take your time, you could be pumping out results a lot quicker.

Also read about Pending Credit in the forums, before you start asking questions on this.

Well, it seems I'm not as advanced a user as I thought I was. I followed all the instructions for installing the optimized app and it ended up deleting all my tasks. A week of computing astropulse down the drain. :(

I guess I'll stick with the default configuration and use the default app as I'm not sure what it is I did wrong.

Thanks for your help.

You probably installed an optimised application for either Astropulse or SETI@home enhanced (the latter, from your description), but not both together. I'm afraid it's an all-or-nothing job, this optimising!

If you repeat the process, this time using the Multibeam and Astropulse Combined Packages from Arkayn's page, things may go more smoothly.

I think it's not that easy as we speak about a cuda enabled host

you can try this package. that's what i'm running on a similar system (AMD 4400+ XP Pro 32bit + 9400GT)

Don't forget to reset permissions, that's why i always kill my WUs when using a new application :)
The permissions should be the same as that of the setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

To optimise the app_info.xml you should calculate the flops as explained in the first post of this thread

for your non-cuda host Richards link is perfect

Thanks for the help. I've followed your instructions Hoger Zanti I'll watch it for awhile and see what happens. It downloaded some AP's but it didn't appear to attempt to fetch any cuda, but I guess time will tell.

Just got a cuda, guess I'll cross my fingers now that they validate.
