Maybe someone can help me with this....

I read the info on the "pirates@home" site, and it sounds like they're doing development for a later project -- but pirates itself doesn't actually do any science.

Now, I think it's cool that they're working on their screen saver, and I think it's cool that they've got this test project running.

But why the enthusiasm? CPDN and SETI and LHC do something, Pirates doesn't.

Yes.

Some key words to look for... "At present Pirates@Home is not doing any real scientific computation."

I take that to mean that the situation will change in the future.

You would think that projects other than SETI@Home would keep on top of the current core client software versions. I can understand the different "worker" client versions, but not the core client.

EDIT: Duh, that's all they have to do is update the "worker" client to be compatible with the current core client.

Most of the projects stay fairly up to date. Predictor is waiting (and waiting and waiting...) for a new set of servers from Dell. Until the new hardware comes in, they are not going to be updating to 4.xx, and they will not be handing out any work.

Ahoy! Good question! I do not understand t' appeal o' t' Pirates meself other than t' say it be stupidly excitin'!
Maybe it reminds me o' early days o' SETI@home.

The link to the site is here, I hope. I'm trying to remember the html code for doing links, don't do much of it. Anyway, be careful using them. A lot of other users could get anoid having so many graphics to load. That's why I switched to the one I use below.

Hi Siran, the other projects download the entire boinc software package, ie the database, the validator, the transitioner, the schedulers, etc. They then set the variables that berkeley has made available, decide how to setup the database to record the info that their app produces, etc. Thus when our guys make major changes to the system, it takes them a while to update. They have to make sure that the changes are compatible with their system and won't corrupt the data they have collected. It is a very complex system.
