Cats do shred things in the house. I know this because I live with 8 cats, and they have shredded the couch, the mini-blinds, the clothes hamper, the box springs of my bed, a door jam, bathroom towels, toilet paper rolls, basically anything that they can get their claws into.

Oh, and moving something up off the floor does not protect it from being shredded unless it is at least 8 feet above the nearest climbable surface.
