Well....the kitties finally purred me out of my bad mood, and I pieced the Penny back together....

Not at all sure if it's gonna be stable yet, but right now I have it crunching once again...

4.0ghz, Thermalright Ultra 120ex....64c at full load.

Would not be at all surprised if it crashes, running the vcore at 1.425 to keep the temps down a little....

It was at 1.5875 whilst frozen....

Congratulations! I have to keep my i940 at something like 1.375 because of too high temperatures when I go any higher. Temperatures are now in the mid 60's, also using an 120Extreme, and I don't dare take it into the low 70's for the time being. That limits it to 3.825 GHz, higher results in reboots after a while. I hope that the thermal paste settling will make a slightly higher voltage possible. And otherwise I'll have to hook it up to the watercooling gear I used for the q9450, which I retired last week. We'll see. Over the holidays I'll have some time to have a better look at it.

Merry Christmas!
John.

So far the Penny is doing OK in the tropics after having left the Frozen Tundra....

RAC is not rebounding much yet....I will let it stabilize a bit and then might try to ramp it up just a little bit more...but for now I will let it get used to it's new home.

I guess that means the Penny has been devalued, Now Grape ape Nehi's are ascending in value. ;)

Sometime in January it'll move into the top ten by total credit, may get to top 5 during 2009. I'm very impressed, and thank you on behalf of the project.

Thanks Joe.....the Penny sure has been a workhorse....

And thanks for the reminder that you can sort 'top computers' by total credit...I keep forgetting that.

The Tropical Penny has settled down in it's new digs....
Now running at 4.112ghz on 120EX air cooling....ram at 1644mhz 7-7-7-15 timings....
About 67c temps....might go for a fan upgrade on the 120EX to try to cool it down a bit....

Mark, what fan are you currently using with the 120EX?

It came from Crazy PC with the cooler....
Scythe

It is rated at 110cfm....but is only a 120 x 25mm frame....
I think that 120 x 38mm fan even will force a bit more air through the heatsink against the backpressure from the heatsink fins....

Maybe something like this 252 cfm Delta bad boy....
Now THAT's a manly fan!! It will make a bit of noise to be sure....and I'll have to verify the frame construction to make sure it would work with the mounting clips on the 120EX..

Holy Smokes! 60 DBa... slightly more noisy than I prefer and a bit too expensive with the NZ/US exchange rate in the slums at the moment... Oh Well.

Well...I am sure there are some in-betweens.....the Delta is pretty radical....
This model Scythe would also be a very good choice at 1/3 the cost and much lower dba level....
In fact, it might be a better choice than the Delta....truth be told, you can only force so much ambient air through a heatsink and still reduce the temps....

The Delta would certainly ventilate a case very well however.....

That sounds pretty good as well. Just need to make sure it all fits in the NZXT Lexa Blackline case.
I was looking at this: Vantec 120mm Stealth Fan (the one right at the bottom)
NZ$39.00 = US$22.41

But... If you can find something better... I'm all for it.

That Vantec is only 53cfm....if you are going for quiet..OK. But I would shoot for something in the 100cfm range at least.

Well, I'll try - I admit 53cfm is quite low.... Also, I'm not aiming for quiet, but I'm not aiming for Hardcore Bleeding Edge either. Right now I have my system marked up to a total NZ$3,720.19 (US$2,144.20). I just want to make sure everything (physically) fits.

Anything you can recommend must be for the better I suppose.

I can second this:
- the Delta is VERY loud (don't wanna know how loud it will be with two or more of them in one case); it's nothing you can use when you got the rig in one of your rooms... ;)
- after testing it as accelerator for incoming air and mounting it directly on the cooler it ended up now as best solution to get the air out of the case as fast as possible...
- the UltraKaze 3000 is now my favourite one: using it in every rig I got, as long as it fits. Excellent cfm, acceptable dBA and very attractive price-tag. If there's only place for 120x25ers, I'm switching to the Kaze-Jyuni 1900...
The only disadvantage I've found: some of them didn't match the proposed MTBF...and two didn't run at all... :(

Yup...the 3000 looks like the ticket....the cfm for a 120 x 38 is very good.

Looks like my next favorite fan as well.

Or Bleeding ear drums for that matter, There are Delta fans that go to around 148-151cfm, They aren't too noisy and they do work. :)

Eventually I'm going to put PC1 into a Coolermaster HAF 932 case, The X58 Motherboard is being sold by Newegg for $299.99 of course, But I won't be able to buy one until about April or May, It'll go into the HAF 932 that I have now.

I may after getting the BloodRage, Get an ATi 4870 X2 for It, Hopefully by then Seti will have an app for the ATi cards as they have 1600 stream processors on the 4870 X2. :D

Hmmm... I'm planning on using the NZXT Lexa Blackline, and then mod it up slightly with a Sound Flux and a few cathode tubes :D

ATi on SETI?... not sure on that one...
