... you're going to have to break some eggs. It is an unfortunate fact of computing that any time you upgrade something, there is going to be some sort of pain along with the advantages. ... and while I understand all the grousing, it doesn't change the fact that the only to avoid breaking things is to leave them very much alone.

Putting CUDA back into Beta likely won't fix it, because the problems with CUDA weren't found in Beta. But shouldn't they have at least anticipated what scenarios could happen and develop into (possibly major) problems? For instance: * The Servers running out of work * Message boards getting swamped * Affect on CPU crunchers Luke. - Luke. |

what affect on them if they don't want cuda its easy to turn it off. what do you mean by this |

George, there is no way to turn it off yet. Only in Beta is that an option. |

add this to your cc_config.xml file <no_gpus>1</no_gpus> then boinc will not see the cuda devices and wont run the cuda app will do the old 6.03 one |

George, there is an effect (and it's only going to get worse)!, have you been reading all the threads? I don't know about you, but I don't run CUDA. And I know for one that Mark is nearly out of work on two rigs and I had trouble getting work this morning. Who knows how many other crunchers are having problems fetching work! CUDA is stealing from others! - Luke. |

to me the project running out of work right now is a good thing because that mean we are doing the most work that can be done cuda is stealing from others! how the sever is handing it out when ask if there is work at that time so its fare to all because you all have the same odds of getting work. |

I'll second that one, Stealing sounds about right, Every time I start Boinc up I get No work and I don't run CUDA as I don't have an 8xxx/9xxx Nvidia video card as I don't have money for that. I've got a lot invested in Quad cpus, CUDA isn't open to Me since My cards are a 7800GTX and a bunch of 6200's and a 4400. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

CUDA is stealing from others! One of the issues that you overlook is that many of the people that are complaining the most are not using BOINC as Dr. Anderson sees that it should be used. And that is as a multi-project tool. So, the first priority of the BOINC development team under his direction is to make BOINC work with several projects. And later to correct issues with single project users. I am not saying that this is going to suit some people, but, that is the design of BOINC and what it is intended to do. TO run multiple projects and to keep idle CPUs busy come rain or shine ... if not from project A, then from project B. Thus, people like me are doing better with the roll out of CUDA because we don't get hung up on running just one project. It is almost like being mad that your hammer does not do philips screws very well ... it was never intended to gently insert a screw ... And as Ned stated, and as I stated elsewhere, beta finds some problems and when they find no more issues ... the software is released and then you work on the issues identified. No pain, no gain. Could the roll out have been better? Sure. But is it the end of the world? No. And the work belongs to the project. Not one guy that can process 10,000 tasks a day. That is nice, but it is not an entitlement to the work. Work is first come, first served ... Anyway, you can have my share ... |

...Running out of work right now is a good thing... Don't expect the WU shortage to end anytime soon! If nothing changes it's not only going to be permanent, it's going to get worse, until our computers are being drip fed once every day. how the sever is handing it out when ask if there is work at that time so its fare to all because you all have the same odds of getting work. So then what's the point of CUDA? CUDA is meant to process Workunits faster than the average CPU isn't it? If it's all even, CUDA will just become like any other ordinary CPU based machine, but will still run the Servers dry of Work for us. - Luke. |

... you're going to have to break some eggs. The reason the bugs, etc were not found in Beta is because it was not tested in Beta. The adaptive replication testing saw to that. |

Winter, you have just confirmed something another tester has said. Nothing was actually tested in Beta. It was just thrown to main. How many 0's did the donation have I wonder. This clearly wasn't done for the benefit of the project. |

This maybe arrogant but: George, I have a hunch you only support CUDA because you have a CUDA enabled graphics card/s. You like the fact that your RAC will increase and you'll see an increased flow of more credits, or I could be completely wrong and that you support CUDA because in your Point of View you believe CUDA is "good" for the project. And Don't reply with "your only anti-CUDA because you don't have a CUDA enabled GPU" - well in fact I do, but I refuse to use it as I view it right now as doing no good for the project. I have myself covered in nearly every aspect of this discussion. And I'm not saying CUDA is bad for the project - I just think on both the part of SETI and nVidia that they shouldn't have rushed it. CUDA stealing from others?? Some of you really should either back off or at least read your own writing before posting. I could as well say, that all you dualcorer`s are stealing work from my poor singlecore barton! Stop this immediately! Limit yourself to single core, because i cant/wont/have no monies to upgrade this Barton to multicore! Now, do you see how stupid it sounds? |

CUDA stealing from others?? Some of you really should either back off or at least read your own writing before posting. Not as stupid as having written it..... Sorry, my friend.....not an attack on you... My top two crunchers have been down for the last 24 hours...... Are you feeling better now? More work for you? It happened before when Dualcores were introduced. Suddenly, some individuals had RAC doubled/tripled overnight. You cant stop the progress, no one can. |

CUDA stealing from others?? Some of you really should either back off or at least read your own writing before posting. When I posted Haos - I thought about this and I'm going to cover myself with this: My dual core stealing doesn't affect your single core because you'd still have a huge cache of work to access at the SETI servers, so this doesn't affect you - now that CUDA exists; it's different because it's stealing so much that others can't get work. That I define as true SETIstealing. - Luke. |
