I would like to suggest that Eric start a sub-forum for Cuda discussion....

Number Crunching - CUDA

There are quite a lot of posts here about the subject, things are getting a bit scattered, and subjects are being duplicated in multiple threads because of it.

I am sure it is going to continue to be a hot topic for some time, so I would suggest the new forum be opened and Cuda related threads be moved to it for clarity.....

The current situation has become an absolute mess that will only get worse if it continues as is.
Issues & responses to Cuda/GPU application need to be better organized.
Berkeley has "encouraged" the general user base to run the GPU application,
There are a growing number of issues & unanswered questions that need to be responded to by Berkeley Admin/developers.

The current level of confusion & perceived difficulty risks alienating users and slowing adoption of the app unless better support is extended.

There is a CUDA forum in the Q & A section.

I don't think it is reasonable to merge both forums at this moment while S@H enhanced and S@H classic are considered different projects.

Just to keep things clear, the setiathome_enhanced application is what's often referred to as MB here and this project does use it. The current Windows version here is 6.05, which includes the CUDA capability. SETI Beta is a separate project where 6.05 was briefly tested before being released here, and is now testing 6.06. S@H Classic was the old non-BOINC version of S@H which closed down several years ago.

I don't have a firm opinion about whether putting CUDA discussion in its own forum would be an improvement. If everybody were always careful to stay on topic it might, but human nature makes that unlikely.

Yes, but parallel to Number Crunching in the message boards......
If Eric does not consider it a good idea, it won't happen....

It is a Number Crunching issue.....but most of the activity is unique to Cuda processing, and I think it will stay active enough to warrant it's own forum here....

Questions are being duplicated and information about Cuda is being scattered throughout the NC.....

I think it would be a good thing for all of us to have the info all in one place....

I have to agree with Mark, it would be nice for those of us who just CPU crunch. THere must have been at least 25 threads all relating to GPU crunching created in the last 24 hours. Most of which repeat much of the information. Having a separate forum would probably help both sets of crunchers.

Unfortunately, I'm not sold on the idea either.

For one, there has been a couple complaints from casual readers that there are too many areas to visit to get information; they want them consolidated into one area for simplicity.

For two, as you admitted yourself, it is still Number Crunching, and yes there is a lot of activity because it is new. Once things settle, it will be just another thread every so often just like the others.

I agree that the information is being scattered, and confusion is ensuing from having to chase down all the information, but the problem is actually compounded by the users starting new threads for old subjects instead of staying in a single thread.

I think we, as Mods, should actively start locking those threads with links to the discussions already in place so that everyone doesn't feel the need to respond in each one of them.

I was just trying to make a constructive suggestion. I think the topic will be a very active one for some time to come.

And if you got all the threads and posts consolidated in one place, then you could start to combine threads that were duplicates....

It would make it much easier for folks looking for Cuda information.

I think one of the problems with the help forum is that to get there, you don't
go to the "message boards", you have to go to "questions & answers" from the main page. Lots of people just go to the message boards and don't see a better place to post, IMO. I think a "message boards" category for Cuda could help move some of this out of number crunching. There will always be some who don't post in the appropriate place, though, but it could be cut down some, maybe.

All that is assuming they go to the front page first, or have bookmarks for the forums. I'm thinking most people click on the buttons in BOINC Manager, where the Help button shows "Ask questions and report problems" when you mouse over it... simple. ;-)

Could be, I've never used that method myself (as I don't even run the Boinc manager...).
