Is anyone other than me a little concerned that a new project, i.e., Astropulse, suddenly appeared on their computer without warning??? I'm not anti-Astropulse. I offer my computer resources to Seti@Home willingly. However, when I suddenly discover a new project running on my computer I didn't know about, it makes me wonder how safe my computer is running Seti@Home. I can't be the only person wondering about this.

Astropulse is not a different project, it's another way that SETI@home uses to search for ETI... just like the normal SETI@home Enhanced application that you already run.
Astropulse takes significantly longer than Enhanced, and it doesn't give the same credit per second as Enhanced also, this is why I choose not to run it at this time. You can choose to disable Astropulse in your SETI@home preferences if you also like me don't want it to run on your computers, because it is enabled by default I believe, but if by chance have already disabled it and you are still recieving them, see this thread.

Astropulse takes significantly longer than Enhanced, and it doesn't give the same credit per second as Enhanced also, this is why I choose not to run it at this time.

Jason G posted at the opt.-crew-board that Enhanced AK v8.0 and Astropulse v5.0 [both optimized!] have around the same Credits/CPUsecond [on Intel-CPU [E8400]]..

The best way to know it - is to test on the own system.. :-D

SETI is a project that is currently doing two different kinds of searches for ET: one for narrowband signals (Multibeam) and one for broadband signals (Astropulse).

The Future Plans page has been available for ages and has always had a section on Astropulse. I just wonder how many people noticed the change to "Enhanced" and then the introduction of the Alpha receiver and Multibeam.

I did try to make people aware of Astropulse, by ensuring that Josh provided a FAQ, Seti Beta thread -AP release soon. And therefore we did have a AP FAQ sticky thread here on the first day and a duplicate link on the front page titled "About Astropulse".

What more could be done?

We'll, I've taken your advice and set my celery to receive only AP tasks with the AP v5.00 app installed... now to catch an Astropulse WU and see how good it really is... ;)

Except that I've agreed to "crunch" SETI, and since AP is SETI, why should I expect some big notice? Why would the project be expected to offer an opt-in?

The names aren't that important.
