Message 831266 - Posted: 16 Nov 2008, 21:50:26 UTC - in response to Message 831259.

Mark, I'm just drooling in anticipation in building a stock rig, but not @ £881.25 for the cpu alone.....I'll wait a couple of months (weeping sounds heard in the background).

And in $(US) that's just obscene, I can go for a 940, But the 965? Nope, Not Me.
But in U.S. dollars, considerably less. The usually cited thousand-unit price for the 965 at intro is $999. When supply and demand get in some balance, the better web sites usually settle out somewhere near the 1000 unit price.

At this moment (Sunday afternoon November 16 in the central U.S.A.) there are several web sites accepting pre-orders for BX80601965 at prices from $1087 to $1199.

Not that I'm suggesting that as the plain and sensible solution. I was myself contemplating a 920 for a build I wanted to complete this fall, but opted for a Q9550 instead. Considering RAM and motherboard, I had a drastically less expensive system and could get it built on my schedule instead of having the commissioning start impinging on the holiday season.

At the moment something like a dozen credible web sites are taking pre-orders on the 920 (BX80601920) at prices between $320 and $400.

Once sensibly-price motherboards come out, and the realities of the RAM situation get sorted out (how much effect on SETI output does the number of channels populated and the speed of RAM really have?) a 920-based box may well be the successor to the Q6600 which was the sensible speedster of choice for a fair few months. Right now it looks more like an early adopters and enthusiasts market.

Well, if this article from the Corsair site is any indication....
The RAM bandwidth on the i7 is looking good....and I know it made a lot of difference on the Frozen Penny going from DDR2 to DDR3 at the same fsb and cpu clocks............

Probably true, Me I have a few things I may or may not be doing in the new year, But that's how far ahead I plan things like some purchases, I'm going to get a secured credit card in which I have to deposit $300(minimum) and from there I have a few things to do, Before any PC purchases will be able to be done on the x58 PC below:

1-ASUS P6T Deluxe
1-Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz cpu
1-Patriot Viper 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
3-COOLER MASTER HAF 932 cases[upgrades to 2 existing PCs as well]
3-Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme(Copper)[upgrades to 2 existing PCs as well]

Of course not in any real order as some plumbing in the Kitchen needs to be completed first under the sink.

Here you go guys.........as they allow you to take some of the money in cash (Maximum £500.00), I've had the cash & given the cheque to Andrea. She's literally over the moon so I sneakily got her to agree that the next win (I've had numerous over the years), she gets the £500 cash & I have the cheque!!!!

confirmation...

Hey, no go Joker. I stopped doing fixed numbers years ago.....all my wins since I stopped have been lucky dips (computerised random numbers by the lotto operator)...see the LD on the Lotto ticket?

I've had tremendous luck this way compared to fixed numbers. If your lottery operator allows lucky dips, go for it.

I've fingers crossed that we have another win before Xmas - I want 2 i7 rigs.....my farm needs boosting!!!!!

Saying that, if you feel lucky with the numbers above, use them & GOOD LUCK.

Nice one Sirius.

I think an i7 is out of the question for me, will have to wait for a couple of years till the next big jump. Will make do with my slightly OC'ed MacPro for now.

You do realise, the other half will deny all knowledge of this cash agreement.

Yes, so on the next big win, will do a Mission Impossible, buy the i7's & pretend it was the profit from the business :)

Congratulations with your lotto win! I play the lotto myself, but have never won anything above approx. 35 Euro (then it still were 75 Dutch guilders), but seeing that it's possible I still keep my hopes up ;-)

John.

I couldn't stand it any more so I sold off an old quad rig which let me pour a new foundation for
the next rig, the Microcenter deal was to hard to resist, which ram to get is the next question, I am
leaning towards the 1600Mhz stuff but still researching (case, pwr supply are easy):

no lotto results for me so Its only the 920 so nothing crazy here
(congrats on the lotto winnings btw)

To much 'green' on that thing ... one could think it's an AMD board...
Blue slots would be way cooler ;)

BTW, is this what i think it is ?

Core i7 based Xeon ?

If so, i want one of those

Then You'd want the Gigabyte GA-EX58 like below(there's a link to Gigabyte in the image):

No i7/X58 is not Xeon.

As long as You've got the money, fine, Otherwise Xeon doesn't have the Memory controller onboard and Xeon is like LGA775 in that respect, i7 is the Intel equivalent of the Athlon, But with Hyperthreading and lots of speed. In any case i7 is not a dual quad core cpu socket design, "Who?" Could You explain this as I think I'm almost in over My head on this.
