Not that I'm suggesting that as the plain and sensible solution. I was myself contemplating a 920 for a build I wanted to complete this fall, but opted for a Q9550 instead. Considering RAM and motherboard, I had a drastically less expensive system and could get it built on my schedule instead of having the commissioning start impinging on the holiday season.

At the moment something like a dozen credible web sites are taking pre-orders on the 920 (BX80601920) at prices between $320 and $400.

Once sensibly-price motherboards come out, and the realities of the RAM situation get sorted out (how much effect on SETI output does the number of channels populated and the speed of RAM really have?) a 920-based box may well be the successor to the Q6600 which was the sensible speedster of choice for a fair few months. Right now it looks more like an early adopters and enthusiasts market.

The RAM bandwidth on the i7 is looking good....and I know it made a lot of difference on the Frozen Penny going from DDR2 to DDR3 at the same fsb and cpu clocks............

Probably true, Me I have a few things I may or may not be doing in the new year, But that's how far ahead I plan things like some purchases, I'm going to get a secured credit card in which I have to deposit $300(minimum) and from there I have a few things to do, Before any PC purchases will be able to be done on the x58 PC below:

1-Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz cpu
1-Patriot Viper 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory
3-COOLER MASTER HAF 932 cases[upgrades to 2 existing PCs as well]
3-Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme(Copper)[upgrades to 2 existing PCs as well]

Of course not in any real order as some plumbing in the Kitchen needs to be completed first under the sink.

Hey, no go Joker. I stopped doing fixed numbers years ago.....all my wins since I stopped have been lucky dips (computerised random numbers by the lotto operator)...see the LD on the Lotto ticket?

I've had tremendous luck this way compared to fixed numbers. If your lottery operator allows lucky dips, go for it.

I've fingers crossed that we have another win before Xmas - I want 2 i7 rigs.....my farm needs boosting!!!!!

leaning towards the 1600Mhz stuff but still researching (case, pwr supply are easy):

As long as You've got the money, fine, Otherwise Xeon doesn't have the Memory controller onboard and Xeon is like LGA775 in that respect, i7 is the Intel equivalent of the Athlon, But with Hyperthreading and lots of speed. In any case i7 is not a dual quad core cpu socket design, "Who?" Could You explain this as I think I'm almost in over My head on this.
