Mine too is written using "bloatware". To my mind, without MS there would not be enough 'puters out there for there to be a *nix community. That's not to say that I agree with everything MS does but you have to recognise the contribution that the company has made.

I'm with Fred on this one. De facto standards bring prices down and create an equity amongst competing manufacturers after they embrace the standard. Same thing as when IBM came out with the first standardized PC. For sure, it was a clumsy, disgusting machine. But look where that open-architecture hardware has brought us.

In the long run it didn't do IBM a whole lot of good, did it? Sure was beddy beddy goot for Intel, though.

Bob

Yep, It was berry, berry gud fer Intel und the rest of US.

Hi guys, I sold the last 2 rigs I had available for sale & will be soon restocking - OUCH & this close to Xmas.

Genuine comments only please - Is it worth going for one of these or wait until the real 8 core becomes available?

In the past, I've been a bit miffed off with Intel, but since the Q6600, I've seen from this board that they will now take some beating & am sorely tempted to build one!

Well......it's the usual story.....ya either jump in and start swimming, or ya wait on the dock and see what happens to the ones that did.....(Jaws theme starts playing in the background).
When the 8 cores are ready for release, there is no doubt that there will be something else on the horizon to give one pause to ask the same question you did once again....'Is it time now?'

I am sure that at some point, Seti users will see the kitties launch a Frozen i7......but it's gonna be a while this time.....my finances and the fact that it is not just a processor upgrade this time, but a new mobo and new RAM as well, just are making it impossible for me to jump in on the bleeding edge of this launch.....as much as I might love to.

That is, unless who? or some unknown benefactor sends me the processor......then I'll pony up for the mobo and RAM and freeze the bejeezus outta them.....LOL.

Question is, Will You or I get the basics all together soon?

Except I believe the i7's require a 3 stick matched set for proper 3 channel operation....no?

Now where's my benefactor that wants to see a frozen i7??

I'll know more about how big or small My electric bill will be when the 28th rolls around as I'm crunching with one PC for a good while. And as to Angel She gets Tuna every night and I had gotten Her a new litter box, I take good care of My antique Kitty. ;)

It was only $4 for the box, And I will and do. Besides If My thoughts are correct I should be able to afford to buy a 920 cpu, a P6T Deluxe, 3GB of Patriot PC3-12800 Blue Viper ram, a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, 2GB Patriot PC2-8500 Viper ram(for PC2) and 3 New Cooler Master 932 HAF Cases beginning in February 2009, As no more money is going to be put into the house as Its a waste of money right now, But maybe later 3 more windows will be bought.

I've accumulated CPU time and AR for quite a lot more Work Units on the two Nehalem hosts for which I posted earlier results. It remains true that the 64-bit release 42 and the 32-bit release 41 each have the advantage in distinct portions of the Angle Range spectrum.

In the overall graph it is clear that 64/42 has a big advantage at VLAR near Angle Range 0.01

expanding this view in the highly populated region near Angle Range 0.4 clarifies that 64/42 wins here too, though by a less compelling amount:

and a separate expansion covering the VHAR range over 1 adds detail to the clear advantage 32/41 has here

A major flaw in the execution time comparisons I posted earlier, for example in message 826585 was that most of the work on my Q9550 and Q6600 was performed with one SETI and three Einstein tasks, while all the i7 host work was performed with a full SETI load (8).

I've taken the trouble to accumulate a few tens of hours of 4-SETI running time on those two hosts, and here offer comparisons to two Nehalem hosts. To facilitate estimate of overall host computation output comparison, I've used the second y-axis scaled in "Nehalem time" compressed by a factor of two.

The Q6600 here was running slightly overclocked at 2.79 GHz, while the Q9550 was running dead stock at 2.83 GHz. Francois has said that the host I'm calling Neh_1 is overclocked at 4.0 GHz. I'd guess Neh_2 is rather similar, but have no information besides that contained in these graphs. Folks contemplating specific configurations can get pretty close to the proper SETI output by scaling the clock frequencies. Non-scaled RAM parameters mean this will not be perfect, but I think you'll find it rather close.

expanding this view in the highly populated region near Angle Range 0.4:

and a separate expansion covering the VHAR range over 1.

I was surprised to see how big a SETI advantage the Penryn-generation Q9550 had over the Conroe-generation Q6600 at near-identical clock rate. In particular, the Q9550 suffers much less from moving up to four simultaneous SETI tasks than does the Q6600. I'll make a separate thread start on that comparison.
