But that's five cores. I wasn't aware that they were producing penta-core CPUs. Actually, if you check out alphax's computer list, it shows 7 cores on three systems. I wonder about the other two cores not listed. :-) |

Just curious: should the results of this thread really be considered scientific being at its posted at the largest BOINC project so naturally its going to have a skew in favor of BOINC users? No, the point of the original post wasn't to get a scientifically valid survey. The point was to see how many active community people who run BOINC & Seti have also tried other projects, specifically Folding@home. This was prompted by reading about so many organizations sponsoring Folding@Home's research, but you don't hear much of anyone sponsoring a BOINC project (at any scale). |

I kind of started to like ClimatePrediction, because it does not require a constant connection to the internet. You can get by with a connection of once every 30 days. That is one advantage of Climate. You have to have a pretty fast CPU (that's running most of the time) to make it worth crunching, however. Although I disagree with what most environmentalists' policy about what we should *do* regarding global warming, I do support research on the earth's climate. So, I crunch Climate as well. |

I kind of started to like Climate Prediction, because it does not require a constant connection to the internet. You can get by with a connection of once every 30 days. While I don't do any crunching for Climate Prediction, I also don't agree with everything some environmentalists say, I don't think CP is a bad thing either, Caring about the Environment is a Good thing, But being practical is less extreme and do able, Going off of oil, gasoline, diesel and natural gas/propane cold turkey without a different solution being readily available is crazy, I'm all for Solar(Photovoltaic, Thermal, etc), Wind, Geo-thermal, Nuclear and any other green energy source, But most will take years to build and equip with a support infrastructure that doesn't for the most part exist.(Power Lines and such) Am I against drilling or making coal into oil as a stop gap, No. I don't see fuel cells as being more than an experiment and something for Governments and the very rich as their not mass producible so far for at least the next 20-30 years and they may never be mass producible either cause of the materials required for the devices to work correctly, Hybrid & Electric cars right now are easier to develop for and are far more practical than fuel cell cars as are cars that use CNG or LNG or Bio-Diesel for Diesels. As long as coal's done right and CO2 is somehow split into Oxygen and carbon or made into frozen CO2 blocks and sent below the surface of the oceans(the Pacific, Atlantic or the Indian) where It's deep and beyond the continental slope where the pressure will keep the CO2 from turning from an ice to a gas(It has been tested, works perfectly and I saw It happen on TV), CO2 ice on an aluminum arrow once dropped sinks out of sight leaving a small trail of bubbles that soon stop once the arrow reaches a certain depth as seen on camera. SETI only. Did a little Rosetta last year when SETI was down for a while, but these days it's 100% SETI. Folding would have to run on my PS3, and I only turn that on to watch Blueray DVDs or pull up pictures from my main computer for viewing on the large screen TV in the family room. |

I don't like the word NEVER, but so far Seti only. Pluto will always be a planet to me. Seti Ambassador Not to late to order an Anni Shirt |

The only non-BOINC project I've ever done was S@H Classic. The only BOINC project which holds my interest is S@H. I did do one LHC@home WU at a time when there was no S@H work available, though. Joe |

I've tried with other projects once upon a time, SETI just has a great feeling about it that seems to "lack" in a sense with other projects (don't know why),but if I HAD to crunch another project I would. A few things I like about SETI@home is that it is one of the few projects that: has a dedicated base of users and steady output of work that you can rely on (99% of the time :) - Luke. |

Did some years ago run Genome@home, a project that had an excellent client for dialup-users, even if it was beta. But, unfortunately Genome@home downgraded to using the Folding@Home-client, a client with crappy dialup-support, since you can't cache work, and can't even resume uploads/downloads but is forced to re-start at zero. Also, at the time was limited to max 4 FAH-clients on a single computer, meaning for me the FAH-client would have been sitting idle roughly 75% of the time, since no way to download enough work to keep FAH busy between connections. Now, 6? years later FAH-client still has crappy dialup-support, but I'm thankfully not using dialup any longer. But, with various BOINC-projects also doing "Biology and Medicine"-research, sees little point to install a non-BOINC-DC-client. "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

My higher RAC is due to QMC@home. Reason? Quorum is 1. Tullio |

BOTH! SETI@home on the OCed Core 2 Quad CPU and Folding@home GPU on the EVGA 9600GT OCed SSC video card AT THE SAME TIME! What if Fiction was Fact and Fact was Fiction and vice versa? |

Boinc Seti only. Seti's been good to me, so Im gonna stay loyal. |

BOTH! SETI@home on the OCed Core 2 Quad CPU and Folding@home GPU on the EVGA 9600GT OCed SSC video card AT THE SAME TIME! That's not a bad idea. For a quad core box, crunch one cpu on folding, the other 3 on boinc. |

BOTH! SETI@home on the OCed Core 2 Quad CPU and Folding@home GPU on the EVGA 9600GT OCed SSC video card AT THE SAME TIME! Does Folding GPU version need a CPU core too? Or can you do 4 BOINC cores and 1 GPU Folding core at the same time? Daniel |

BOTH! SETI@home on the OCed Core 2 Quad CPU and Folding@home GPU on the EVGA 9600GT OCed SSC video card AT THE SAME TIME! The GPU version does need part of a CPU core, so you would need to limit BOINC to 75% of your CPU. |

Folding (and Boinc's Rosetta) are probably more practical than SETI, but I figure the Little Green Men will know the cure for cancer anyway. <humor> I have a PS3 Folding though. Other than occasionally playing Blurays, thats all it does. |

Folding's GPU client barely uses any CPU power on a nVidia 9600GT OCed and a Q6700 OCed (4% CPU power). So yes, you can use 100% power. (you lose very little to Folding's resource use and the low priority of the processing threads for Seti will allow both to process on the CPU happily.) I've got my PS3 and 9600GT Folding reaching a max RAC of around 3000. What if Fiction was Fact and Fact was Fiction and vice versa? |
