Maybe it would be a well idea if Berkeley would be the organizer of a yearly Gauntlet?

Unfortunately I expect he'd say he's too busy keeping Seti afloat to do a Gauntlet.

Last year, the SETI@home Gauntlet was hosted by SETI@Netherlands.

You can read about what happened last year here; http://www.seti.nl/content.php?c=gauntlet_2007

If you want more info, register on SETI@Netherlands forum and contact XP_Freak; http://forum.seti.nl/

Dirk Villarreal Wittich,
"The Gauntlet" was just the name they gave to the competition. It was meant in the context of a team challenge.

And yes, we won the competition last year.

John.

It would be a nice booster for SETI@home for maybe 2 or 4 weeks.

So maybe it would be well if Berkeley would make one or two (or more) Gauntlets/year.. :-)

But I'm afraid whether the Berkeley server can manage the higher/harder work.. ;-D

I have raised the idea of sponsoring it to my team SetiUSA. Should get an answer shortly.

I have posted a message on SETI@Netherlands forum about this; http://forum.seti.nl/showthread.php?t=14964

As last years winners, I don't mind running the competition but i don't have the ability to do competition stats or any stuff like that. http://www.boincteams.com would also be a central good place to host it as there is about 150 team founders registered on the forum.

I'm open to ideas.

Define "Gauntlet", please.

In this context, I understand it to mean:

gauntlet

a. to accept a challenge to fight: He was always willing to take up the gauntlet for a good cause.

And indeed, the challenge comes from:

1. a medieval glove, as of mail or plate, worn by a knight in armor to protect the hand.

whereby in days of old (long ago), a challenger would throw down (an old?) gauntlet for an opposer to pick up to accept the challenge of a fight.

If somebody or some team wants to host it, we'll advertise it on the front page.

I doubt one of us would find the time to host it here.

I think the teams should throw down a gauntlet against NEZ.

That would be a top bet!
We would need to form a whole legion of speedy PC´s for such an event....!!
The only thing I can do right now is to show a speedy face!!!!!!!

SETI USA didn't compete? Odd, I thought they were all about competition.

SETI.USA is an exceptionally large team, there was an issue with the fact that they were likely to crunch more work than all the other teams combined. There is no fun in everybody knowing the winner before it starts.

I'm sure that SETI.USA will be fine this year if they agree to break-up the team into smaller sub-teams just for this Gauntlet.

Example SETI.USA sub-team names;
[SETI.USA] hard cores
[SETI.USA] Mac users
[SETI.USA] Space cowboys
[SETI.USA] Power house

Then each sub-team designates a team leader who is responsible for that particular sub-team.

Here are some advertising posters for the competition;

Nice button too!
