I guess Fred W’s math is an example of ‘fuzzy logic’. ;)

About $400 in so far and I have, or on order, mobo, Q6600, hd and memory.

I think that I am going to drift a little over my original $500 budget but not outrageously so. :)

Oh, hey, with 2 GB I can put Vista in. (hides behind couch)

OMG.....XP x64, my dear.........

Kidding. :)

I've a copy of XP home SP2 (OEM version). Not perfect, but it was free.

Geez.....ya gave the kitties a fright.......LOL.

<snip>
Seriously, hopefully the OP will enjoy Her New PC when She gets It built.

What do you mean: "When she gets it built"?

50% of the enjoyment is in the planning, 30% in the building, -10% in getting it going and downloading all the software updates and fixes, leaving only 30% for the use of it. 'Course, then you hanker after that 50% buzz again so it's back to planning...

F.

Does not compute, Beep. ;)

Look carefully: 50 + 30 - 10 + 30 = 100 in my book. Luke's simple maths problems weren't all waste. I do miss them.

Don't forget to factor in a fine bottle of wine to enjoy after assembly (can also be used to put out the fire :)

Hmmm... no video card yet... The cheapest PCIE card you can find... I like the GEForce 6200LE with passive cooling (no noisy fan). Sometimes free after rebate.

What I am thinking is to build it with no extras.

I want to run it completely unadorned for awhile to establish some baseline numbers - specifically what kind of RAC (using AK‘s special stuff, of course) I get.

Then, as I start tweaking things, I can make judgements for myself about what is worth it and what is not. So, at some point, I will probably put a card in to see how much it improves things. But I do want to get the base data first.

Sounds like a fine plan to me :)

The vid card probably won't change a thing at stock speeds......
It may however, affect your best OC.....BUT...as you are not likely per your previous posts, to take things to my extreme, you may do very well without....
The main thing is you need to keep an eye on your CPU temps.....the cooler will become a factor early on when you start to push things a bit.......

Just in case I missed something, the EP35 you ordered does NOT have onboard video.

This thread is really making want to build a quad core PC.

Does XP 64 make a noticeable difference over 32-bit Windows?

Yep, I would definitely use the built-in video for a cruncher-only machine.

The mobo being used does not have built-in video.

@kenzieB - you will need an el-cheapo video card.

Sigh. Steep, steep learning curve.

Will this work?

Only $20 after rebate, so I hope so.

Good!

To be added to my next order the first of the week. :)

And I don’t mind the ’whoosing’ sound of fans anyway. White noise is good for sleeping.

Off to work now. Gotta pay for all this. . .

Hey Mac, This place has some info on Newegg.ca, It seems they'll be online sometime around October 10th 2008. Probably too late for the build, But still.

Kenzie,

When you get all your parts together, or at least before you start building the beast, lay the mess of stuff out and take a pic of it all for us.
This is a fascinating thread.
Ya see, I'm not a grll either.
But this sort of stuff scares the .... outta me.
You go girl !
