I'm not normally one to complain, but for the last several hours (6 so far) I've been trying to upload and download to SETI@home, only to receive back the message "Upload (or download) failed; HTTP error" This is happening both on SETI@home and SETI Beta. At first, I thought I had made an error in my settings here at home, but there are other reports on SETI Beta indicating I'm not alone. Any comments or suggestions would be welcome ... |

Hmmmm -- All of a sudden, the problem has cleared up. Either I was seeing things, or I happened to kick the right box at the right time. Sorry for the complaint, and thanks for the quick repair ... |

Hmmmm -- That's what my messages showed about 2 days ago on my dualaptop, although it cleared itself a few hours later, me thinks it has something to do with the Upload/Download probs... Me also thinks the servers are still getting hammered... stick with it... Luke. - Luke. |

so far since the server was fixed I've had 2 of these failed download errors, this is what the log says The most common http error is "500 internal server error", which is basically the way the servers drop a connection for which they can't do what's needed. Then there's "503 service not available", which is similar but supposed to indicate the server recognized before even trying that it wouldn't be able to do what's needed. I've seen many of each recently, they're just another symptom of the struggling servers. Older versions of BOINC like the 5.2.12 I'm using actually report the code, but with new versions you'd have to turn on some log flags using a cc_config.xml file to get those details. The bare "http error" can indicate either an internet communication problem or a Berkeley server problem. There are many other error codes defined for the http protocol, but I think it's fairly safe to assume it indicates server problems when other evidence supports that judgement. Joe |

The erros are due to a bit of an overload on the system. Now that plenty of new work is being produced, after the last couple of days problems, the servers / network link seems a bit over loaded. Nothing that you need to do, the software will just back of and try a few minutes / hours later. Nothing gets lost as the system is designed to tolerate this sort of problem. My machines are throwing up similar messages, but eventually they are getting work units up and down, so things are still working. It might just take a day for things to return to normal. Ian |
