And there is a whole lotta background on this scene......like one of the Charger stunt drivers getting aced when they crashed into the gas station........
Bullit...........really funny at times.....even I could only double clutch so many times........
But when he drops the hammer at the start of the chase, it is priceless.

And Lalo's score is just amazing......

And ya know.......that Charger just could really run the shorts offa that 'Stang........
Straight line challenge? No contest.......the Charger wins.

And ya know what........just watched it again.......
Those few seconds of footage with the Charger romping over the hills and listening to the 397 chuckling as it sucks wind on the downramp is just a treasure.....can you dig it baby???? Or was that a 440?

The Charger in Bullitt had a stock 440. That's 390 horses singing, my man. I always wanted that engine. Another GREAT Mopar motor was the 383. Sadly, the engine on my '69 Dodge was the 318. A good motor, but pushing a full-sized Polara, it was way underpowered.

So, after waiting 30 years, I got one of the new Chargers. Not a 440, but squeezing 350 horses out of a 340ci engine ain't bad! Sorry, they call them 5.7 liter nowadays.

Well......my best ride was my 500 some Pontiac......ex drag racer with a refitted big block......silly arse fast, and that's no lie....

Sheer guts and glory........I think my Buick Grand Sport was a teeny bit faster, but wow......anything over 145nph aint bad,,,,,,

A buddy of mine had the '71 Grand Prix w/the 400. Had a hood that went into the next time zone and the classic Pontiac nose. The cars before '73 were huge and virtually all metal. They handled like crap, but they were fun going straight!

This is sitting in our garage. My hubby built it a few years back. I learned how to drive a 4-speed with this car. It is a 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T. It has a MoPar "crate" motor that's 526 cubic inches. The price of that motor before any modifications was $13,000+. It has about 750HP.

Sound of 526 inches of power...Crank up the volume and the bass to get the full effect.

For me the chase is a farce but I like to watch the cars anyway.
The company that insured the film set and the stunt drivers layed down so many restrictions on the set for the chase that it became unreal.
You have never seen the streets of SF with so few cars and pedestrians.
The streets were blocked off by the police and every vehicle and pedestrian in the shots were either stunt drivers or well insured extra's.
For me the chase in "The French Connection" beats Bullit into a cocked hat for realism.

Shortly after Bullit was released a chap from SF went out of town for a blast on the highway in his Cobra.
Heading back into town he saw in his mirror that another Cobra was catching him up as they came into the outskirts of the city.
The first set of lights were red and the chap stopped. The Cobra behind him pulled alongside and Steve McQueen looked across at him and shouted "Nice wheels".
The lights changed and the driver floored it in the assumption that McQueen would drag him to the next lights but McQueen just let him go.
The Cobra driver related the story to his pals who didn't believe him so he wrote to the McQueen fan club and shortly afterwards received a letter signed by McQeen stating that the incident was true and that he hadn't dragged the chap because McQueen was running on fumes and praying that he would make it to the next petrol station. ;-0

Guadalupe canyon road is a great place to race cars!

I took my 67 Mustang over it with my 351 Cleveland, 4 speed a few hundred times.

:)

Fun!

Cracking film. Just finished watching it on dvd last night, forgotten how times that makes it. At the moment, trying to get "Le Mans" on dvd.

Oh, that's grand.......
Glad you and I were on the same page......even though the page is getting a little old and crinckly......

Not to digress, but it is about the same vintage as Dirty Harry....... Feel lucky, Punk????

Sad to say, but with over 9000 films/TV series in my collection, I do not have "Le Mans" & haven't seen it since it's original release in the cinema.

Not sure if my memory serves me correctly, but asides from "The Great Escape", didn't McQueen do a motorcycle film?

I also really liked the chase in "The French Connection" in which undercover officer Gene Hackman is chasing a subway overhead through the streets of New York city below the tracks.

Looking at it again, Gene Hackman's great acting really adds to the frenetic fright of the whole thing. Shows you what a good actor can do for a chase scene. :]]
