Good to know, I nearly break my laptop every time I quarantine it for kitty hair. It gets into the keys and fans, horrible job to clean. But that time is always made up for by affection from my two.

Luke.

Oh, lappys can be a terror to disassemble from what I read here in the forums...I have never had one. As you can see, mine are readily accessible for fan cleaning and hardware modifications.

And I never hold it against my kitties that I must clean their flying fur from the fans.....
Like you said, their love and affection is worth it all.

Thank you for sharing Mark, an impressive rig for sure!
(I do very much understand the dusting part - same boat here)
Like Joker, I am about at the end of the rope for cooling, I may have to turn off a few rigs
to ease off the utility bill, but in the interim I added a 14000 temp BTU cooler to the office:

BTW Mark, which mobo were you using to get those clock rates ? I am looking at a pile of
goodies I got from frys today including a Q9450 for $249.00 usd So, I need a good mobo
and am willing to try an ASUS P5 something..... This will replace an old dual MAC G5 that really
doesn't make sense to run since the RAC rots.

Two days ago It was 111F outside and very soon It's supposed to get to 112F(Tuesday) and 113F(Wednesday and Thursday). But like Mark says You can't go wrong with a P5K Deluxe motherboard, PC1 has a Q9300 running at 3.52GHz 24/7 and It uses a P5K Deluxe w/the 812 Bios, Perfect motherboard, Get some pc2-8500 ram too, It does real well with It too. Today I turned 48 and here's the cake or at least what's left of It. ;)

And I got $100 in a Birthday Card to boot.

Yes, lappies are a pain to clean...

For a comparison, here is my top cruncher (15.4in. screen)(as of 20 minutes ago) that has just had a thorough 1 hour cleaning (keys removed, cleaning agent... etc, etc) compared to Mark's above... (All the kitty fur seems to accumulate when I'm at work... hmmm...)

This is in the 'study' of my house (not that I have kids...) And is usually kitty off-limits. In the background, you can see my SETI certificate.

Luke.

The Frozen Penny, my 3.6ghz Q9450, and my daily driver are all running on the Asus P5K Deluxe....which takes DDR2 ram. Update it to the latest 0812 bios as soon as you have it running.
If you want to run DDR3, there is a version for that also, but I have not gone to DDR3 yet, so I would have to find the number for you.

Nice rig Mark. Now I know why the fir sticks so well. As far as the DDR3 version of the P5K Deluxe, it's P5K3 Deluxe. Hard to remember.

I did, Everybody was eventually there, Kathy finally came in after 8:20pm PDT after Her long commute from work, She's a Nurse. We had Steak, Beans and Sausage, Vegies(tomatoes, mushrooms & green squash) w/Home made macaroni salad(Better than the store bought stuff, mayo alone isn't good enough, Jaime adds miracle whip, Mike cooked the Steaks on the Grill).

Yeah PC1 has a RAC of 5,141.84 currently, So It's doing pretty well for air cooling, Will It rise anymore? I don't know.

Thanks...as I have said here before...not the most cost effective way to crunch, especially now that the 45nm Intel stuff OCs sooooooooo well on air, but as a hobbyist, it has been a fun rig to play with.

And LOL, I knew that DDR3 board was there and not hard to find, just never paid much attention as I never made the switch.

I'd love to get a DDR3 motherboard and ram, But It's not cheap still, So I'd wait for a while longer until a few more months have passed, Maybe It'll start coming down then, Maybe. Heck just upgrading two motherboards(DDR2 versions) and cpus to 45nm would be impressive enough for now for Me, I'd be producing almost as much w/3 quad cpus as 4 quad cpus Do now, Which is pretty dang good. Although I don't know how Yer getting an average RAC on one 45nm PC of about 8,000 RAC, Unless It's the FP that's doing the 8,000 of course, Although the FP may be the baddest cruncher around.

This makes me think of this exchange from star wars:

Well, the way RAC works, any change in a rig's crunching speed takes about a month to average out...
So if you pop for some hot new ram, and your crunch times seem to be better, don't expect your RAC to fully blossom for a few weeks.

PC1 is takin about 44 to 52 mins to crunch WU's and as to buyin faster ram, That seems to be limited to Patriot, OCZ and Corsair(I'm lookin for 4GB only which is limited to by Me to: 2x2GB), OCZ makes their Flex II @ 4GB for PC2-9200, But is hard to impossible to find for sale, Patriot makes PC2-9600 ram in 2GB packages only, Their fastest 4GB package is rated at pc2-8500 in the Viper series(Which I like a lot), Corsair makes something 9136, but as to what I don't know off hand. In any case My priorities aren't in that direction right now, I've got a Windows and an Aquarium project to complete and they are taking absolute priority for the next 12 months, Then I need to upgrade the weatherstripping(Or the almost total lack at the bottom of the back door) on the back door or replace the back door entirely, After that we'll see.

I found that some concentrated tinkering with the timings on my PC2-8500 Corsair RAM, particularly the "Performance Level" parameter, helped get RAC up to its present 8264 (was 8500 a couple of days ago) on my Q9450. I think the 12M of L2 cache doesn't hurt, either.

That's kind of surprising there. My Q6600/G0 at 3.0 Ghz should have a lower sustained RAC than your Q9300 at 3.52 Ghz. And according to Andy's page, that's true. Yours should be about 4% higher than my roughly 5900 RAC. (And mine did peak out about 3 days ago over 6000.) Here's to watching PC1 continue to rise. :-)

I think your "tinkering" is paying off... The frozen penny seems to have a distinct advantage on the VLAR (63.98CR) WUs where higher CPU freq performs better, but on the WUs requiring higher bandwith your "tuned" Q does very well at closing the gap. I wonder if this is a prime example of the P5K Deluxe advertised "Super Memspeed" at work ?
