Hi, When I started using seti@home and BOINC in late May 2008 my RAC was clsoe to 100 but it has steadily dropped. Can any one explain why this should be so? Also, I receive two workloads and, for example, each is shown as having 4 hours to run. Why is my PC taking much longer to do the units? How do I get to download more than 2 work uinits? Thanks for any help. Corries1 |

With your computers hidden in your account, it is hard to tell if you're returning bad work and thus not being credited. Returning bad work will also affect how much work you can download as sort of a fail-safe mechanism so that one single host cannot trash a bunch of science. |

I changed my preferences earlier to 'show computer' and I have just done so again. Hopefully it will be visible now. Thanks for your help. Corries1 |

I changed my preferences earlier to 'show computer' and I have just done so again. Hopefully it will be visible now. I just checked, but your computers are still hidden. No way to tell what is going on without having a look at your results. Regards, John. |

After saving the changed preferences to the web site, open BOINC manager, Advanced View, Projects tab, select Seti, click Update. This makes sure the computers are visible to us. |

Hi, Thanks for your help and I am sorry for this problem. I have updated my preferences, saved them to the web site and updated the seti project in BOINC manager. I have checked my preferences settings and it says that my PC is visible yet when i do a user search on my own name it says that my computer is hidden. Am I missing something or could there be a problem at Seti's end? Thanks, Gavin |

Hi, Can you stop/close BOINC and restart it. After it restarts, post the first 20 or so lines of your manager. I'm also wondering if by chance you have set preferences locally and they are overriding the website. What version of BOINC are you running? Wendy Click Here for BOINC FAQ Service |

Gavin - Looking at your messages below, it looks like you have set preferences inside of the BOINC Manager which is overriding the website preferences. If you have your manager open, are you in the simple view? If so, click on Advanced View. Then click on Advanced, Preferences. Hit the clear button on the right side. Then hit ok. Go to the Projects tab, highlight SETI and click update. That should allow the web preferences to take over and hopefully we will see your machines. Wendy Click Here for BOINC FAQ Service |

Great sleuthing there, Andy.... Definitely looks to be a lot of restarts going on there. Also, I see that he's running Vista... Gavin - where do you have BOINC installed? Is it under C:/Program Files or somewhere else? Wendy Click Here for BOINC FAQ Service |

Ummmm.... 02/07/2008 19:19:23||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC But I don't think it has something to do with the installation path. Some of the results of this host are different than those from the other quorum host(s) and therefore are invalid & not credited. Time to chase the dust bunnies out of the rig.... ;-) (or reduce the OC / check the cooling fans, if they are still functional) HTH Andy |

The first step is to move BOINC from c:\Program Files\BOINC to c:\BOINC. Having BOINC in the Program Files on Vista triggers the UAC which causes multiple problems. Steps: Uninstall BOINC MOVE the entire directory tree from c:\Program Files\BOINC to c:\BOINC. Install BOINC. (Hint: Installing as a service removes the startup prompt). The second thing to do is get some compressed air, take the case off the computer and blow the dust bunnies out. Then tell us what is going on. BOINC WIKI |

John - I've seen another thread where the CPU throttling was causing some restarts, could that setting be a problem here as well? Wendy Click Here for BOINC FAQ Service |

John - Since it is a dual CPU system, a CPU throttle of < 100% could indeed cause a resetting problem. BOINC WIKI |

Is it worth changing the path as suggested earlier? On Vista? yes, always. The problem with Vista is that it does not natively like it when programs write to files and directories in the \Program Files\ directory. BOINC writes to its files a lot (multiple times a second even). |

H, I have taken all suggestions on board. I have changed the path and got rid of dust. Here's hoping. Thanks to all of you. :) Gavin Corries1 |
