Good news,
today I switched on my "Skulltrail" the first time after the adventure of mounting. And the 4 to 8 pin EPS 12V adapter cable works. Temperatures of the FB-DIMM goes down from 80 to 60 grad Celsius after I switched on the two big 28cm fans of the towercase. The cpu-freezers work great, the three 12cm PWM fans are running very slowly...
I must still bye and install a Operating System now.

heinz

I have the Intel D975XBX2 Mobo and in the manual I can read, if I let run the CPU not stock.. so if I want to overclock.. ;-) I cannot use a 4 to 8 pin EPS adapter..
I bought a CORSAIR PSU with 8 pin EPS connector.
The first be quiet! PSU (also with 8 pin EPS) was broken/burning after one year.. :-( ..not because of heavy OC.. ;-)

So take care of the rig if you want to OC..!

Always takes time, to 'average out', your 'R.A.C., could be a month or more, also depending on the 'deadline-issue' off your 'wingman'.

Your 'rig' should be able to handle 8 to 12K (RAC=12,000).Even more
(Don't know if you can/will OC the rig, IF possible).(Maybe complicated, with 2 physical CPU's, but also depends on MoBo&BIOS a.o. Enough GFLOPS, without OCing and probably more stable too :-)

Have a good and pleasant CRUNCH!NG T1ME ;+).

And the 4 to 8 pin EPS 12V adapter cable works.

it is the left one on the picture.
Note: The Skulltrail need two 8 pin EPS connectors, I did not found a 1000W Powersupply which has two of them, so I must use the "4 to 8 pin EPS 12V adapter. In the mainboard description of the Skulltrail you can read:
Caution !
Failure to use the appropriate Powersupply and/or not connecting the 12V(2*4) power connector to the desktop board may result in damage to the board, or the system may not function properly.
-----------------------------------
I asked already in Lunatics outage thread but get no answer.
Further I wrote email to AXP support tech@axpertec.com --->

tech@axpertec.com

Hallo,

I bought the Powersupply AXP Supernova 1000Watt to use it for the board Intel D5400XS(Skulltrail). Now I have seen this board need two 8 pin EPS 12V connectors, but the powersupply has still one of them and a 4pin ATX 12V connector. Can I use a "4-to-8-Pin PSU Adaptor Kit" like this one http://www.xoxide.com/tt-psu-adaptor-cables.html or have you such a adaptor which you can send me.
It would be nice if the powersupply would be certificated for the "Skulltrail-Board" and has this additional adaptor. I suggest to proof (in collaboration with Intel) if the power of the 4pin ATX 12V connector is great enough for using a adaptor for the D5400XS board.
Thanks in advance.

Second I wil tell you both sites www.xionusa.com and www.axpertec.com are not acessible for me in France since some weeks. So I can't look there and must write email.

Regards
Heinz

Hi Jason,
till now no Operating System is installed..What do you think should I install Vista Ultimate 64 Bit ? 8 GB FB-DIMM is installed.
I run into a small trouble, I installed a internal Super Multi DVD rewriter with serial ATA interface on port 6, but the BIOS said there is no CD/DVD to boot, the IDE port is free, because I would boot from a Compact Flash, but till now I have not the hardware-solution to do so.
Perhaps the new Serial CD/DVD boot, if it is connected to port 0.
This I must still try out.
Any ideas ?

heinz

win Vista 64 is supported, what is the Bios versio you are using. We just posted a new BIOS 1140. previous version of SKT boot out of USB DVD, SATA DVD, and USB floppy without problem. try to connect your DVD to port 3. Make sure you have the RAID configured properly. With RAID ON, even with one disk, you get more performance than AHCI, or IDE.

often an attached SATA DVD will be listed in the device boot list as a "seperate named" device. For the most part CD/DVD boot device = IDE attached device.

Hi Francois,
If I switch the machine on, the raidcontroller did not find my 2 Barracuda ES.2 ST31000340NS a 1 TerraByte disks. Looks like I must configure the Raid-controller in the BIOS and switch something on there.
The BIOS was up to date, so I must not update the Bios.
BIOS Version: XS54010J.86A.0926.2008.0218.1455

Now the disks are configured as IDE. Sure not optimal, but on this way I get summary 2 Terrabyte data from the disks. Till now I have still 2 disks so no RAID5 is possible.
FDISK is not usable to prepare the disks for installation. So I let it do from the install routine of Vista64. All runs fine, but wondering, I have now on every disk a 2GB Partition which will not be used by the system, they are raw. Vista64 resides now in a 50GB Partition on disk 0, behind the 2GB partition.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF THE BURN IN ARE OVER(after 7 days)
I will reconfigure the SKT by using Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 to install boot menue and easier partitioning.
My SKT-boot menue:
1. Server2008
2. Vista64 Ultimate
3. XP-Professional 64Bit
4. Fedora9
further I will configure some virtual machines under Server2008.
If I do so I will reconfigure the system as RAID 0(striping), better use a third drive, then Raid5 is possible.

1. Is it possible at first make a Raid 0 and later add a third drive and reconfigure to a Raid5 without lost all data or new install ? Normally this should not be a problem I think. What do you mean, how to start with this.
2. Is 8GB of RAM enough for my preplanned installation or must I order a second set of Kingston KVR800D2D4F5K2/8GB, summary 16GB.
Have seen your SKT has 16GB..uuhh.
3. perhaps it is possible to push up the memory with some 16GB SD-Cards on the IDE port or the USB-ports ?
(my NT4-Workstation runs very nice with a 2GB 266x CF on the fist IDE)

Till now my Vista64 runs without any problems.

so I run the 2 big case-fans at full speed, FB-DIMM sensor shows max 73 Celsius
now these are the actual CPU-temps
Today roomtemp 28 Celsius, the FB-DIMM-sensor shows 66 Celsius, that looks very well.

Hope you look to the temps of the CPUs also.. ;-)

I have for example the OCZ XTC Cooler over my two RAMs to cool them.. because I let run them OCed also..
Your FB-DIMMs have the same proportions/measurements like DDR2-RAMs?

How high you can let run your RAMs (temps)?
Maybe it would be good to cool them active also?

FB-DIMM KVR800D2D4F5K2/8GB

@Sutaru: DDR2 DRAM Interface:SSTL_18

Storage temperature: min -50 max +100 Celsius
AMB device operating temperature: min 0 max 110 Celsius
AMB = Advanced Memory Buffer

Memory Module Specification 4GB-Kit
I have the 8GB-Kit
a picture with dimension is on page 7
I'm still searching a Value Ram fan-cooler, but it must be for all 4moduls and its high should be very small. (I must measure it)
At the time the big fan of the case blows at the HD3870 and onto the RAM-Kit

hehe Francois, have you a hint for me how is your temp of the RAM-Kit ?

The big passive cooler from the Grafic HD3870 hang over 2 empty RAM-Slots, the place over it is very small for a cooler.
A possible solution is to set the HD3870 into another slot.

After the first look the FB-DIMMs and DDR2-RAMs must have the same proportions/measurements. (without any guarantee ;-)

Maybe 5 mm space between OCZ XTC Cooler and my DDR2-RAMs. He is over 4 RAM slots.. but he's big enough to cool 6 also I think..
A pic of my QX6700-2.66 @ 3.14 GHz.. :-D (to now with boxed-heatsink..)

Maybe with good luck he must go under the CPU-heatsink ;-)

..have a RAM-cooler also.. but he's more narrow and higher.. and make high stange fan-whistle from my experiences..

Hi Sutaru,
thanks for the hints...
If I set the "HD3870 Ultimate" into a other slot the OCZ XTC Cooler must fit.... we will see. If I upgrade, I will make some new pictures.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The V8-Xeon is now the 9th day under full load of all 8 cores. The machine runs absolut stable and the temps are moderate cool for air-cooling. Sure it's not oced.
I tried Everest to have a look into the machine, but have still the Trial Version so not all values are shown. :-(
RealTemp shows still 4 cores...
Is there a free tool known which shows all 8 core temps ?

regards heinz
