finances are shot.

As in, closing the store until Fall too? Or just breakers going off at 6:00 PM every day from now until fall?

So when do they turn them back on in the morning? You might be able to convince the accountant to let you purchase a UPS that'll support your Californina systems for 12 hours at a time... :-)

Well at least she's got the benefit of it being operable cancer. Some cases they can't even try that. And in cases where they operate, I've heard the survival rates these days are really improved.

Our thoughts are with her.

I've got 7 hours on UPS now, it isn't that hard to do -- that's with five servers.

That was my most recent upgrade / purchase. I've always had a "whole house" UPS system, but I recently upgraded it to give me a higher power output and a longer uptime. The UPS lives in the garage and has a rack of batteries next to it that will support full load for 3 hours. I run the UPS at half load so should be about 6 hours of backup. It got a good workout yesterday during a thunderstorm and happily maintained all the SETI machines and some things in the house (lights, TV etc) for 4 hours. I could if I feel the need add more batteries for a longer uptime; however, I think my next purchase could be an Intel Quad or 2 after my holidays.

Just out of curiosity how much does something like that cost and where would you get it? I am seriously thinking of buying a very light case and taking it home with me. My flat screen TV is supposed to be a monitor also so should just need a mouse and keyboard for home...

Well, I've kind of worked through a rough parts list. Any comments from the more experienced system builders out here?

Q6600
Kingwin Revolution RVT-12025
ASUS P5B LGA775 P965 Express ATX MB
XION II XON-101 Mid-tower ATX case (includes 450W PS)
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 800 RAM

Other inconsequentials (as far as crunching goes)
XP Pro 64 bit
Western Digital Caviar SE 320 Gig SATA drive
ASUS 20X LightScribe DVD Burner (DRW-2014L1T)
ASUS EAH3450/HTP/256M Video card

Total net cost just under $600 US.

It's been almost 10 years since I last built my own system, so I'm kinda just grabbing for inexpensive things to get started. I don't have anything I can really even migrate forward. It's all PCI/IDE and really old things, so just a clean wiped slate with something basic for now. (My PC100 RAM and 8 Meg video card ain't going anywhere. :-))

@Mumps
The one thing I would change there is the mother board (if you plan on overclocking now or in the future). I had many happy months with the Asus P5B but the FSB "hole" between 350 - 400 MHz eventually got me down, and the Northbridge got very hot and became a limitation. I'm now running with the P5K instead and finding it much more to my liking.

I got lucky with the UPS. It is a £1,000 machine but I picked it up brand new off EBAY for £380. The batteries are a bit pricey though. They are £110 each and there are 8 of them. They last about 5 years or so. So all told it's a £2,000 ($4,000) job at proper prices.

LOL....as I mentioned in another thread, the P5K bios has become too large to fit on a floppy......you should be able to get a couple of gig worth of USB flash drive pretty cheap these days.......(not knowing your 'top secret' budget)......

Just rambling around on the Egg (for reasons unknown ;-)) and the price is right around $15 for a 4 gig'er. I may have to throw one of those on my purchase too. ;-)

I passed on the P5K Deluxe because I originally though "Heck, I don't need Dual network, or a Wireless system that can act as an Access Point." But reading more detailed specs, the extra cooling for the infrastructure and more flexibility in the over-clocking (which I'll be trying, but won't get too aggressive) are worth the extra $50.

Yeah......I have the Wifi disabled in the bios, 'cuz I have no use for it either......
I originally went with this mobo because it had the new chipset, but still supported DDR2 ram, and I wasn't ready to go to DDR3 yet.........
