Ok, this is going to be a long post. I finished the dissection and finished sterilizing all of my equipment again. To answer your question Daniel it is a bess beetle. The one thing about this bug that fascinates me is just how much the little thing stunk when I cut him open! Anyway, here are the pics:
Here is one of the legs:

Here is one of my favorite pics. This shows part of the digestive tract of the bess beetle. The white pieces of tissue you see are partially the membrane that covered all of the internal structures and partially connective tissue that held everything in place.

Next we have one of the wings from the specimen:

And here is part of the protective casing that surrounded the wing:

And last but not least is a portion of the mouth structure that I accidentally cut off when I got a little too scalpel happy :)

Nice photos.
I used to do scope work when I was a medic in the USAF all day long doing differentials and blood counts in hematology and stools in microbiology and urine in urinalysis and blood typing in the blood bank and looking at fungi in mycology. Our scoops were way more powerful than here and we even had those fancy electronic scoops too like pictured above.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind investing in a more powerful scope, preferably a trinocular with a decent camera.

We had one with a camera but I never used it and the electronic scoop was the size of a refrigerator laying down on it's side and it had a video camera on it and it would project to a wall screen and had a monitor on it.
I didn't know that people looked through scoops as a hobby it was work for me.

I will have some updates for all of you tomorrow night. I am sorry for such a long delay. I have been busy studying for exams lately so I haven't had much time for this thread :(

Albert,
That bess bug is very cool.....Wow. Really great shot of the digestive tract!. And the leg is super cool.

Sorry i did not get the chance to do the centipede yet, he is sitting on my work bench in front of me going crusty. I will do the photo shoot in the next few days if i get the chance.

I found a perfect moth, eaten by a spider and perfectly preserved!

John.

Thank you John! The hardest of them will be the Spanish exam and that's only because there is so many tiny mistakes you can make, such as forgetting an accent. I am already exempt from two exams at least for being a year ahead in the classes :)

Well, I plan to be taking a lot of biology type classes, I want to make it to medical school to be an open heart surgeon. I will also take a lot of math and some physics, For the following reasons:
1)It interests me
2)It is useful to know
3)It looks impressive on a resume
4)I might as well get the most out of my money.
I am not sure what else I will take. Probably some more Spanish, but other than that I haven't given it a huge amount of thought yet.

Its difficult to get the points in your exams for medicine in Ireland. But you have mentioned several excellent and exciting areas of science so you have many possibilities. I wish you well!!!......Now get back to the books and stop looking for aliens on the Internet....LOL

I've had enough studying for one night :) Now I must go read a book for my honors English class. It is one of my least favorite books, so it is hard to get through :(

I guess I'm not gonna get any answers to the technical questions I asked Celestron about a certain microscope, the 44110. The b-----ds, anyway. I wanted to know the eye relief (since the eyepieces are not highpoint and I wear glasses), something about its claimed Koehler illuminator and whether inserting an eyepiece reticle would degrade the image.

I'm surprised. I have never had a problem with Celestron. I will see if I can find the information for you. If I do I will let you know.
