At Mwave.com you can build your own quad cruncher for under 400.00 and at most stores I would bet. Asus P5GC-MX 53.00 Kingston HyperX 2 gig 62.75 Q6600 219.00 Cheap case with 430 W PS 28.50 Not very overclockable but for POS machine and cruncher I feel I got some bang for my buck at 362.25. Of course I stuck the Q6600 in my play machine and gave that one the E6420...But it is crunchin away at 48C under the counter in a cubby hole... Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... The recent price drop on Intel CPUs makes this even cheaper. The Q6600 is now $199, and the QX6700 unlocked extreme can be bought for $278. All the other components listed will work with both these CPUs It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues ![]() ![]() |

I have to admit with the recent drop of prices and the prospeect of the New Opt app I am tempted to go to the dark side and build a pure cruching beast. ![]() |

I have to admit with the recent drop of prices and the prospeect of the New Opt app I am tempted to go to the dark side and build a pure cruching beast. Depending on your budget, for the dark side OS, the best chips I think are - (a) the ubiquitous Q6,600; or (b) the Q9,450. See the top 40 lists, as there is one doing better than the QX9650 extremes ATM. It is currently sitting at 26. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues ![]() ![]() |

I have to admit with the recent drop of prices and the prospeect of the New Opt app I am tempted to go to the dark side and build a pure cruching beast. The Anonymous machine is pretty OC'd and for a while was running the AK port (though it's back to 2.4V now), so it may be a little higher than reality for the moment, at least until May 1. Also, he who must not be named's 9650 seems to have taken a drop lately, it was running over 6100 before, so I'm guessing he might be doing some testing on it right now, or maybe has some HW issue that he can't tell us about. I've had a 9450 for a couple of weeks now, it's at around the 80th place on the top hosts list, it may climb some more before May 1 (I hope!), it's running around 3290 and using 2.4V. I paid $299 for it at MicroCenter, a great deal in my mind as my first Q6600 cost just over $600! I'd get another 9450 if I already had a board I could drop it into, but I only had 1 that was the proper chipset for these chips. Just some info to consider. ![]() |

I got a xfx 680i mb and 2 xfx 8600 sli video cards and Q6600 chip and 2 ocz 2gb (in a 4gb kit DDR 800) vista upgrade memory and a stock fan with heat sink for the cpu - for 658 USD - and it runs under 40c with smart fan disabled. it ran around 60c with smart fan enabled. I got it all as a kit except the 2 video cars was extra total 658 USD including tax. and it run great! very overclockable! But I am not overclocking. ![]() |

When I look at the QX9775 (SKT chip) at ~$1650 (US) and realize I can build 4 of your crunchers for the cost of a single SKT chip, I have to pinch myself and smile. (Granted I'll add ~$10 each for USB memory stick so I can run BoincPE) nice build hiamps... -JDWhale |

Just moved the FSB up a bit and am still at 48C...Not bad for a cheap machine and it will probably go farther, this is the fastest I've tried. so do you have some sort of diskless BOINC image and the motherboard booting over LAN or something? |

so do you have some sort of diskless BOINC image and the motherboard booting over LAN or something? I upgraded a celeron 2.6 so I used that CDrom and HD. The motherboard seems to Overclock for such a cheap board. I now have the 6420 @ 2.4 It's a cheap upgrade for some of those old machines...I plan on doing 3 more. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons...
