i found some old servers in the basement of a not for profit i volunteer at. Well......I am sure they would crunch 'em up mity fine........ The questions is who's gonna pay for the juice? If the power is no problem.........bring 'em on...... If you gotta front the utilities.........hoo boy.......... Of course,,,,,,every cruncher will be more valuable in a couple of weeks when the new apps are due out.............. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

On the P3 servers the S@H RAC for a dual processor one will be about 300. Any dual Xeons may raise a final RAC of about 700. The caveat is that the servers run the Crunch3r SSE (the P3s) and SSE2 (may not include the Xeons) optimised clients. Is the power bill worth it, when 1 x Q6,600 can produce an RAC of over 3,500 for a cost of about $450. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

the Xeons are all Quads... i understand the power issue.. it seems a waste to recycle these they'll probably be used as a server somewhere anyhow |

less then $450 if you can borrow a cd-rom for os install and not use a case...plus then you dont have to worry about heat from OC'ing as much |

I found an old Compaq Prosignia while going through my junk pile that booted as soon as I powered it up. I tried to load Speedfan to get some info but it kept crashing with a null pointer. I loaded BOINC without realizing I had forgotten to set to receive no new tasks and it loaded one task. 17 hours later it finished crunching and got an immediate credit of 52. So I am the proud owner of a RAC of 5 on this machine. Pending credit is 0 ;-) User name on that account is Catatonic, user # 8861738. The machine is a Compaq Prosignia with a Pentium 3 running at 450 Mhz. It has 64 Mb of RAM and is running Windows 2000 Pro. Cooling is a huge passive heat sink, no fan except the case fan. Hard drive is ~ 8.5 Gb. It benchmarked to 419 FP and 692 Int MIPS. Anyone know of a lower active benchmark? So, do I call it a flower pot? Or maybe an herb garden? Bonsai? |

It benchmarked to 419 FP and 692 Int MIPS. Anyone know of a lower active benchmark? I powered up my old Pentium II 333MHz machine (because I miss my old DOS batch file programming) that scores lower than that. Host ID here. I'm sure Alinator has some slower hosts with his AMD K6-2s. LOL I can even power up my old AMD K6 (not an -2) 166MHz machine with Windows 95 on it! Or my IDT Winchip 180MHz which scores about as low as a Pentium 100MHz LOL. |

It benchmarked to 419 FP and 692 Int MIPS. Anyone know of a lower active benchmark? That is slow. I just shut mine down. One WU, score of 52, RAC of 5. I guess is is as low as I can get. I wonder what rank it got. I have one K6-2 in the junk pile but it has no memory and I am not going to even guess if I have any that would fit that old junker. |

I have one K6-2 in the junk pile but it has no memory and I am not going to even guess if I have any that would fit that old junker. I just fired up an old machine and it is an Athlon XP 2400+ with 249M and after installing Ubuntu (the purpose of the exercise) it had 6.1 G of disk space left ... It runs surprisingly well, and even runs M_Way and a couple other projects reasonably well ... I think I have one more "carcaus" in the other room yet to look at ... but, that is for another day ... it is probably slower ... Now to find a home for them when my brother sends me back the Dell dual Xeon he is not using (though he says it won't boot) ... well, we shall see ... |

Measured floating point speed 168.96 million ops/sec Measured integer speed 649.2 million ops/sec It runs 24/7, and has a RAC of 10.5. |

I have one K6-2 in the junk pile but it has no memory and I am not going to even guess if I have any that would fit that old junker. Junk pile?!!! I still have a K6-MMX with 1MByte L3 cache going strong as a backup machine. The case is also an essential support base for other equipment! I just fired up an old machine and it is an Athlon XP 2400+ with 249M and after installing Ubuntu (the purpose of the exercise) it had 6.1 G of disk space left ... That's still about 1.5x the power of my present main machine (but with 1.25GByte RAM). It runs surprisingly well, and even runs M_Way and a couple other projects reasonably well ... That depends on what OS and what applications you run ;-) (OK, so an upgrade is long overdue... But why 'fix' what still works well?) ML1, I was going to quote, then decided to heck with it ... The old machine I installed Ubuntu Linux on it as t eh disk was small and I wanted to see if I could stand up a Linux machine. The only app I am running on it is BOINC as I do my work, such as it is on the Macs ... The G5 is still the center of a lot of what I am doing as I am still waiting on the Mac Pro to be settled in ... though I have moved much of what I do to the Pro ... As far as fixing what is working "well", well, I am only allowed so many machines before the frown machine starts ... so, fewer boxes with fast insides is the ticket ... Of course, if she divorces me ... well ... then that is no longer an issue ... So, are you interested in it when I am done with it? SInce you think it is, ahem, valuable? I may even have one that is slower too ... I ran out of places to plug things in for the moment so I have not tested it to see if it is still working or not ... but, it looks like Saturday I will be delivering the one computer to Nancy's friend and setting it up ... so until my brother returns the Dell I will be able to mount up the other one and see what it does ... at least for a day or so ... |

ML1, Don't quote me... You'll lose your posts in the inevitable 'collateral damage'. Aside, I've just tried a (very quick!) game of nuclear chess. Quite a giggle that requires 'alternative' tactics! Of course, if she divorces me ... well ... then that is no longer an issue ... Oooer... Smiles are much better than frowns! Look to see what might help? So, are you interested in it when I am done with it? SInce you think it is, ahem, valuable? I may even have one that is slower too ... Sorry, no. I've got similar space restrictions and a full quota of slow machines. I'm also on a different continent to yourself. I'd rather the transport costs go to a better cause. Enjoy your experimenting! Martin, The problem is that I don't smile ... as a rule, when others are rolling in the isles I am smiling enough that it can be detected ... Nancy said it took her about 20 years before she was confident that she could tell when I was telling a joke ... Someone else said my sense of humor was so dry it made the desert look like an ocean ... Back to the boxes, I took a look at the last one and it was an old HP, I think it has a second generation Pentium in it ... not sure, I have no more slots to plug in a monitor so can't check... Well, a task for next week ... Of course, if I am real lucky I will have the dual Xeon back and it will not have anything worng with it ... For the moment, I am colored happy with about 6,000 to 7,000 CS per day with what I have running at the moment ... {edit}My RAC is artificially high because I am switching between projects daily,so, the better number to look at is the daily "earnings" ... never thought that RAC as a metric made sense anyway ...{/edit} |
