What happened to the Seti @ Home software?

I'm going to assume you're going to edit your post per my PM. I will be online for a few more minutes to check back to see if you did.

What happened to the old software? The old software and servers were out of funding and would have been shut down completely if it weren't ported over to BOINC. So your options are, no SETI or SETI under BOINC. If you really believe in the search, the former shouldn't even be an option.

You can read more about it here in a post made by SETI Admin Matt Lebofsky.

Since you do not like BOINC, and I believe BOINC is superior to SETI Classic in almost every way, is there any chance we might be able to have a discussion on this? What do you dislike about BOINC, other than the fact that most humans hate change itself? What is it about BOINC that is frustrating you that perhaps we can help with?

Yes, I'm replying to my own thread, but I couldn't find a CONTACT ME section on SETI. They don't want to hear from there followers!

Followers? This isn't an occult. Don't want to hear from anyone? A little searching and you can find Eric Korpela and Matt Lebofsky's email addresses easily. And what would you tell them? An angry message about how they're stupid and don't know anything and how they should bring back SETI Classic? I wouldn't want that stuff filling up my inbox either.

Listen, the new program stinks. They've lost thousands of people because of it. Bring back the old SETI program. This new Boinc (or whatever its called) has driven more people away than it has attracted. Fix the problem! The current one is HORRIBLE.

So how can they make it better? Simply claiming it's horrible without giving examples is just ranting.

Bringing back the old SETI program simply isn't possible, no matter how many people may or may not have left the project. There was no more funding to keep it going. SETI was given to the open source community to keep the search alive. If they hadn't done that, SETI wouldn't exist right now and you'd have nothing to analyze.

I've analized thousands of packets for you and want to continue. But this new program just plain stinks, and lots of people think so. You've lost lots of people and you know it. FIX IT!!!!

Fix what, precisely? What is broken? What is wrong? What isn't working? You need to be more specific. It doesn't matter how many people may or may not agree with you, this isn't a popularity contest or customer satisfaction survey. BOINC is highly flexible and I've seen many suggestions added to the program over the last several years. If you want to help make it better, please give examples and constructive ideas.

I noticed you haven't had a machine attached for over a year (last contact was Feb. 2007). So you haven't tried the newer versions of the software, and you're apparently thinking that BOINC is simply an upgrade that can be 'undone'.

By the way, yes SETI Classic lost a lot of people when it switched over to the BOINC platform, but in the last few years the new BOINC-SETI has gained plenty of users (currently over 500,000). New, open minded people will always be willing to give the software a try.

@Chris

Why not give BOINC a try? i was not keen on it @ first but you do kind of get used to it,i understand your gripes about the change and i understand that not everyone likes change but after all you spent alot of time crunching data on classic so surely it`s the doing your bit that`s important rather than the application you use to do it!

One of the project developers noted during the period where both were running that S@H BOINC was doing more science per day than S@H Classic with fewer than half the number of active users. So even if we lost a few people in the transition, more science is getting done now than was getting done in the past. When it comes down to it, it is all about the science.

OZZFAN, HELP!
I've downloaded BOINC about three times, but can't find the point where I select SETI as the program I want. I've tried the message boards, but I'm lost three words in as I don't understand the jargon. Please help in words of two syllables or less (LOL) --CATHERINE the Kiwi

Once you download BOINC, you then have to go through the Attach to Project process. Check this link BOINC Manager (simple view). You need to click on the Attach Project button.
Also this may help you as well....

Joining a project ¶

To participate in a BOINC project:

1. Download, install and run the BOINC client software.
2. Click Add Project, or select the Attach to Project menu item. Enter the project's URL. This is the address of the project's web site. If you like, you can copy and paste it from your web browser.
3. Enter your email address and a password of your choosing.
4. BOINC will open a web page that allows you to set other account data, such as name, country, and preferences.

That's it!
Wendy

I may not be Ozzfan, but am sure I can help.

Install BOINC as you would normally install any other program, then run BOINC Manager. If you never installed BOINC before, it should open the Attach to Wizard automatically. If it doesn't, no harm done, you can always reach it from the menu bar.

In Simple View:
Open BOINC Manager->Add Project;
Next;
click on Seti@Home so the URL shows in the address bar at the bottom;
click Next;
since you have made an account already so click on "Yes, existing user" and fill in your email address and password;
click Next;
click OK (or Finish, I forget).

In Advanced View:
Open BOINC Manager->Tools->Attach to project... and follow the wizard there like I showed above.

To be able to communicate with its internal parts, you should allow BOINC.exe, BOINCMgr.exe and if your use the screen saver, BOINC.scr through your firewall.

And that should be it. If you don't understand anything, please ask.
