Message 722063 - Posted: 4 Mar 2008, 23:13:04 UTC
Last modified: 4 Mar 2008, 23:13:59 UTC

Hi there,

I'm returning to SETI@HOME after a long period of being away (I was on the old system), how do I know if SETI@HOME is working properly and if it's uploading/downloading data to my computer?

Thanks

Jim

You can use BOINC Manager to see if the tasks are running (or use Windows Task Manager and look for setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe for SETI@Home's application filename). The messages tab will give you some data on the history of what BOINC has been doing since you opened the current session (it resets after each restart of your system).

If you have download and installed BOINC, then the first thing you need to do is attach to Seti.

If the Attach to wizard doesn't come up automatically, after you opened BOINC Manager for the first time, go to Advanced view, Tools->attach to project.

Click Next.
Find Seti@Home in the list of projects.
Click it.
Click Next.
In the following screen, choose Yes, existing user.
Fill in your details, meaning your email address and the password you set up for your account here.
Click Next.
Click OK.

And that should be it. BOINC will download work and the Seti application for you and do all the rest. Crunching will start after that each time you start BOINC.

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for all your responses but here is a copy of all the information from my message tab in BOINC Manager.

It appears your downloads are not going through at the moment. Most of those files are required so that SETI@Home can run. Those HTTP errors usually happen when your firewall is blocking the program from performing downloads. You should tell your firewall that BOINC is allowed to use TCP Port 80 so that these files can get through.

Hello !
I return after a long absence (2002). I am French user and I have just downloaded Boing but a problem arises. It's impossible to download this:

02/04/2008 01:07:53|SETI@home|Temporarily failed download of setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe: http error
02/04/2008 01:07:53|SETI@home|Backing off 2 hr 48 min 7 sec on download of setiathome_5.27_windows_intelx86.exe

I sought of the assistance but what I found did not enable me to solve the business. I configured port 80 (TCP) for my firewall. The error persists. I will not wait 3 hours so that it tries again. I do not stop clicking on the button "To try now" but I always obtain the same answer. The ReadMe file made me the same thing but was finally downloaded. Nevertheless, for the project TANPAKU, all was downloaded in less than one minute.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hopefully, you did not configure port 80 for inbound. BOINC only uses port 80 and 443 outbound. It uses port 31416 for internal communications (the UI would not work if it was blocked).

Sometimes projects have difficulty downloading work because of bottlenecks at their end, and nothing you do at your end will have any effect. For example if Project A is downloading without problems and Project B is having difficulties, it is most likely at the server end.
