WASHINGTON, DC - History was changed forever yesterday when NASA received a transmission from an alien species. The brief message, addressed to "abuse@NASA.gov," read simply: Humans -- Please discontinue sending stupid unsolicited transmissions and debris to us. We have received several metallic craft bearing objects, crude drawings, and disks which play noises when scratched with crystal-tipped needles. We don't know who "Bach" is, but tell him for us that he should consider another profession. Honestly, we receive thousands of unsolicited transmissions and craft from societies such as yourself to the point where they become a great nuisance, so discontinue this practice immediately or we will be forced to report you to your information provider or, more simply, blow up your stupid planet and all your stupid life-forms. Send your junk to the Gezor -- they have all the class and intelligence of stewed clazin. Regards, Elinzoa Glppaducc Information Processing Coordinator The Shati-Makal NASA immediately cancelled plans to send up a time capsule containing a CD of the Ricky Martin hit, "Livin' La Vida Loca", and a VHS copy of "Friends." 700MW, Are you Italian? > ...but you forget crop circles.. Et voilà ! The Terrestrial cheat of crop circles (in English) The Terrestrial cheat of crop circles (in Italian) If you say: > They are already here. Why you participate in SETI@home? ????????????????????????? I'm Italian, I hope you guessed that not from my halting English. Lol. Why at SETI but still believing crop circles being phenomena from an alien civilization? That's a good point. The only answer might be "For any sceptic there is a non sceptic". I need to be a non-sceptic, that's all. I'm not bashing SETI's work, don't let me be misunderstood, I'm perorating such a study. Nevertheless, I think we didn't put enough effort on this research. Evidence is (if the memory serves me well) SETI's money has ended while we have 10-9 to 10-12 probabilities. Can we tell it a WOW signal? Only my thought, no offence to anyone.... |

Crop circle, very nice piece of human arts. Do you guys really belives ET would travel god knows how many light years just to do that ? It is really nice to look at for sure but it is human made. |

If travelling to the furthest most difficult places possible and then leaving only a crop-circle as a 'calling card' is so stupid, then why did humans insist on planting a stick with a bit of coloured cloth attached on arrival at: the top of Everest the North Pole the Moon that sandcastle on the beach (OK, so that one was quite easy really) etc.. etc.. Possibly some Aliens are as stupid as humans, hopefully some will be wiser. |

No really. I saw a reportage on british TV a couple of years ago with 3 guys who were doing exactly this. Lots of planning and cartography etc. They operates at night with big platforms on witch they walked and the next day they showed us the results. Well I was quite convince and impressed by the idea. Those guys do have a lots of talents and imaginations. And...Arts can be (and is) expressed everywhere. There is no doubt in my mind that it has nothing to do with ET although that was there intention to make people belive it is. I wish I am wrong though. It could be fun to see ET doing it... |

btw who says traveling 1000000 of light years is a hard thing for them? But to be honest I have no idea what creates crop circles. I think some could be humans, but I also beilive it started after some people seeing them first. I mean some leave radiation and other weird things behind after being made. So who knows. ------------------------------------------ Have You seen ET lately? |

> btw who says traveling 1000000 of light years is a hard thing for them? Einstein. Even If one could reach the speed of light, witch is impossible because it would need INFINITE amout of energy to make anything with masse to go at that speed, It would still be a 1000000 years travel. Of course we are far from knowing all the physics secrets and there could be some others being that knows more and somehow manage to go from one point of the universe to another in a blik of an eye but I doubt. > But to be honest I have no idea what creates crop circles. I think some could > be humans, but I also beilive it started after some people seeing them first. > I mean some leave radiation and other weird things behind after being made. > So who knows. I don't know if some are genuine but we know for sure that most of those are man made. http://www.csicop.org/cgi-bin/search/search.cgi?q=crop+circles This is of course my personnal opinion and since we have no proof for or against UFO it is very personnal. All idea are welcomes. |

It wasn't my original intention growing up flames on this thread. What I wanted to highlight of Bruno's post, was the "quit sending us". Are we sending something outta there? After all, we are idling since the 1974 emission! Not a big deal in any case, 20TW ERP tw a target having a path loss of 414dB. Only my thought...not bashing anyone... |

Could you elaborate on that 20 Tera Watts (I guess it's effective radiation...) on a 414dB loss path Or point me to a web link about it. I am interresting to know more about this since radio is my domain. Thanks Marc |

Poor terrestrians,... you aren't even shure anymore that "speed of light" is constant. There are serious reasons to believe that at the very beginning speed of light was different than nowadays...(Ok it is constant at the scale of the human lifespan, but that doesn't mean its constant across the eons of time in the universe since the beginning). In this perspective the discovery of the anomalous behaviour of the Pioneer space probes 10 and 11 shows us that there might be even a misconception of our knowledge towards gravity and Kepler laws themselves.(To my knowledge nothing has been so far out before). We always have done extrapolations of our findings to a far more larger distance and time-scale than our immediate surroundings (i.e. our solar system). Perhaps we take to much the things for granted... We don't even know "What is actually causing gravity"... Newton never mentioned the nature of the acting gravity force.(He swept this element wisely under the carpet when introducing his famous laws). Even the great Einstein merely saw gravity as a curvature of space-time. But he bothered and knew that something was really missing in the puzzle, hence his efforts to build bridges between gravity and the other elementary forces of nature till the day he died. We merely have models wich describe how we can get our space probes to Mars but we still don't know where this still mysterious force is emerging from and why it is not used up in time...(Think about the controverse with the energy conversion/conservation law). We don't even know if our concept of the atom is correct.(Shure we can explain a lot of experiments, but...it is divertive knowledge not really fundamentally unifying...) Things may become totaly different in the decennia to come causing all our fenomena to become imbedded in a much more encompassing theory... (We once were so shure that atoms themselves were undividable, we thought the same of the electron,...) Therefore we will have to think out experiments on an unseen gigantic scale, which call for extreme computerpower. So let's use the computing power the earth has at this very moment with BOINC to broaden our scientific views of the universe and to enhance our insight in the true and deeper nature of physical law. (i.e. don't be shure ET is using radiowaves,...why not using quantum ripples in gravity?!!to communicate,.... I mean it would be still a lucky punch when they would use radiowaves after all,... We would like them to use radiowaves, because this is the language we understand FOR THE MOMENT and its ONE of the VERY VERY BIG ASSUMPTIONS that have been made, but we could at that be VERY wrong or hopelessly retarded from point of view of other civilisations. Even the contrary could be true...) No, not a Sci-Fi dreamer, nor a gambler but nevertheless we should try, Greetings from Belgium ;-) |

> radio > is my domain. > Thanks > Marc > Hi Marc, nice to meet you. There are many infos about, either biased and unbiased: Here is one from many: http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/arecibo.html Also interesting is Evpatoria and CETI, the SETI active counterpart: http://www.cplire.ru/html/ra&sr/irm/CosmicCall-2003/ Try also a simple Google search: "1974 arecibo transmission", omit the quotes to let the keywords in AND. Talking about the dBs now, was my guess for the path loss of a signal travelling to M13, 25Kly distant from us, that is around 414dB. Quite a weak signal to detect there. Regards. Edit: Quantum Ripples? Greetings from Italy |

Our current knowledge of the universe is base on two therory (universal relativity and Quantum mecanics) the problem is both theory don't match with each others. They are working within their own limits only. I also agree that a civilisation far more advance then us would not be using electromagnetic waves for communicating but I do believe that they did at some point in their evolution. Any intelligent species must discover the basic forces in the universe and electromagnetic is one they just can't miss. Why should ET necessarely be more advance then we are. Who knows there could be a civilisation located at a thousands LY from US at a similar level of technological knowledge then us. These hypothetic ET would most probably broacasting radio and we will get it in a thousand year. Assuming that we are listening at the right place at the right frequency. Keep on crunching !!! We might wait long time before another WOW signal... |

Our current knowledge of the universe is > base > on two therory (universal relativity and Quantum mecanics) the problem is > both > theory don't match with each others. They are working within their own limits > only. You're completely right. Many researchers are feeling in the last decade rather unhappy because they wanted very badly a sort of "Great unification theory" or better formulated a "Theory of everything". It likes on first sight that for the moment the more we know, the more confused?/unsure? we become... > I also agree that a civilisation far more advance then us would not be using > electromagnetic > waves for communicating but I do believe that they did at some point in their > evolution. > Any intelligent species must discover the basic forces in the universe and > electromagnetic > is one they just can't mis. Sounds very logical and reasonable. (Just like the argumentation in the Drake equation...) > Why should ET necessarely be more advance then we are. Not necessarily (but how could we express this one in a sort of chance formula? ) Who knows there could > be > a civilisation located at a thousands LY from US at a similar level of > technological knowledge > then us. I honestly do think that in this one the odds are uncomfortably against us... (the time gap to bridge space / the chance to have that kind of civilisation at the same time on the evolutionary ladder etc./ We could even receive or send and either they don't exist anymore or we ... don't think about it, lets be positive.) These hypothetic ET would most probably broacasting radio and we will > get it in > a thousand year. Assuming that we are listening at the right place at the > right frequency. Ok I have great hopes on this one. Even if all of us don't succeed, not to have cooperated (when having the possibilities) would be unforgivable. > > Keep on crunching !!! We might wait long time before another WOW signal... One big spin off is that worldwide a lot off mankind do have a common goal and perhaps a kind of understanding / friendship / goodwill that never in history has been seen so directly, thanks to practical global contact via internet. Maybe we gonna need that more than anything else in the year to come. Greetings from Antwerp - Belgium Hugo (Physics) website http://users.pandora.be/hugo.peeters |

All the scientists and the radioastronomers know that the experience of 1974 has been a really optimistic, really theoretical, really academic, really "impossible", SETI's "promotional" experiment.
