Let me start us all off with some regular coffee.




Those flowers smell nice, Richard. They will help awaken me (yes, I'm still half asleep). :]]

Alright, it's time to meet the world. I'll read the papers, read the forum posts, write some emails to friends..and just reconnect. :]]

I've just gotten a good movie classic "The Third Man" (1949) starring Orson Wells of "Citizen Kane" and the "War of the Worlds" hoax fame. It's a Noir film set in Vienna, a place I've lived in when my mother was singing opera there, so it's a favorite of mine. There were spies everywhere in Vienna even 10 years later when I was there. One of them had a "thing" for my mother so he made friends with me to get in her good graces. He took me to secondhand military stores where he bought Cossack sabres and taught me to shoot pool. Later he got out of Austria just in the nick of time, they were coming to get him, you see. An intriguing city Vienna, and a four-star movie to boot. :]]

Well, I must admit they have me scratching my head a bit, especially when trying to work out Beethoven's solutions :P I can assure you that the next set of puzzles will be far more manageable, and will be more about who can see them quickest to solve them for a win ;) So watch out for the next one later tonight and get in quick for the win! :)

First wife, Richard? You Devil, you! How many have you had? LOL

Your first wife was lucky to have lived in 'Wein' (the correct Austrian name for the city of Vienna). I think anyone who has lived there will know what a rich, exciting, intriguing, adventurous and dangerous city it really is. Not that your 3-day tourist will get to know much about it. It's the exact opposite of Las Vegas: all of its riches and action are at least one step removed from the casual traveler. OMG! How much is there, though, churning just below the surface!

But to have lived there!!! That's excitement and adventure to be sure! :]]


I hope Richard, that you had a Tip Top day. I really enjoyed watching "The Third Man" today. One of the great movies of all time!..best of the noir genre. Richard Clooney gave it a good try with the recent "The Good German", a noir film set at the same post-war time period, only in Berlin. A good try like I say, but something's missing: the chemistry between actors, directing, dialog and script. It's the way these all gel together in "Casablanca" or "The Third Man" that makes them the great movies they are.

There had better not be any "cover" or "remake" attempt at "The Third Man"! Did you see the recent remake of "Witness for the Prosecution" with Jeff Bridges as the defendant? What a disaster!!! LOL

It would be even worse with a remake of "The Third Man"! :]]

In New Zealand.... we....
rr-roll our rrrrr's..... we say our a's in words as "ar" (darta) not "ae" (daeta/American Data).... And out two biggest cities "Auckland" (Biggest) and "Wellington" (Capital) have fights over who's got the best stadiums... trains... water.... buildings... so on.... And we moan and complain over slow internet speeds....

Here's a short Primer on Chess Notation. Most of us around here use what's known as "English algebraic".



A Guide to Chess Notation:


With algabraic notation, it doesn't matter which side you're playing, the letters and numbers for the chessboard squares are constant for both sides.



Here's a typical "King Pawn" Ruy Lopez opening in English Descriptive notation:


1.P-K4 P-K4
2.N-KB3 N-QB3
3.B-QN5 P-QR3
4.BxN

and here's the same game in English algebraic:

1. e2-e4 e7-e5
2. Ng1-Nf3 Nb8-Nc6
3. Bf1-Bb5 a7-a6
4. Bb5xNc6


and here's the same game in English (short) algebraic:


1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5 a6
4. BxN


Common Symbols also used:

R for Rook
N for Knight
B for Bishop
Q for Queen
K for King
pawns are usually not written down, but sometimes you'll see us use a small "p" (it's really not necessary though)

x for takes or captures
+ for Check
++ for Checkmate
O-O for castles King-side
O-O-O for castles Queen-side
ep for en passant pawn capture
/=N for underpromotion to a Knight instead of a Queen, for example
! a particularly good move
? a particularly bad move
!? a doubtful move


The Board:


Have a look at the picture below.

As I said above, the names for the squares are "fixed". It doesn't matter whether you are playing Black or White, the names for the squares in algebraic never change. You'll see that the letters on the bottom (a-h) are for the columns, and the ranks (or rows) going up each column...from rank 1 (where your White Officer pieces are) to rank 8 (where your Black Officer pieces start out), and the pawns start off on rank 2 for White and rank 7 for the Black pawns. White's Rooks (castles) start the game on a1 and h1; Black's Rooks start the game on a8 and h8. The Kings start on the e column (e1 for White, e8 for Black), the Queens on the d column (d1 for the White Queen, d8 for the Black Queen), and so on. The columns are lettered for where the Officers start out: a for Rooks, b for Knights, c for Bishops, d for Queens, e for Kings, f for Bishops, g for Knights, and h for Rooks).








So to post a move, you write the piece that's moving followed by the name of the square he's on, a dash (or an x if it's capturing something), and lastly the square it's landing on.

Have a look at that Ruy Lopez "English Algebraic" text I've put in bold again, and you'll see again how it's done.
