Message 740552 - Posted: 17 Apr 2008, 19:25:38 UTC - in response to Message 740526.

A milestone for Seti City indeed has been reached.....10,000 Setizens.......and growth continues at a surprising pace.....
The kitties are pleased.....thank you to all who have continued to help our city grow!!

Unfortunately, with a larger population come problems:
"17 April: The road network has suffered several damages after riots last night."
:O

Kinda mirrors what's happening in the rest of the real world, food an fuel riots, Corn should not be used to make alcohol fuel, Switchgrass is much better. My guess is that farmers like growing corn and are not too interested in growing switchgrass for alcohol and It's only a guess.

The SETI-City simulation is very realistic indeed. Even the buildings displayed are starting to show signs of urban sprawl.

I too am very skeptical when it comes to the economics of corn grown to produce alcohol as a fuel or fuel supplement. The net gain is just too small; it takes too much fossil fuel to produce too little ethanol. Plus it takes much land away from food production.

Some experts seem to feel that the net output for switch grass would be considerably better, but there are apparently some tough problems yet to be solved trying to efficiently convert cellulose to ethanol. If more money were available for serious research it might be solved sooner rather than later.

All I know is that there is a worldwide food shortage, and my grocery bill keeps going up.

Now there's talk of a certain type of Elephant Grass being grown, Which grows twice as tall and is non invasive(Meaning It can't be a weed as It's sterile and has to have a rhizome planted). Where switchgrass can produce 6 tonnes per acre, This type of E-grass can do better at 60 tonnes per acre.

Google search of elephant grass & switchgrass

I heard that, Yeah food prices are something that has been going up, But what can I do? Not a whole lot outside of this.

I had not heard about E-grass. I especially like the zero CO2 footprint. Make virtually clean electricity, then perfect electricity for cars. We wouldn't have to worry about ethanol and the price of steak would go down with more corn feed available for beef.

Now if we could just grow it in Seti City . . . ;-)

Yeah, I'd like to see Him inhale that, Especially when It's 80% water, It has to be dried before It's burnable and laying It down or on the ground will only make It rot.

I use a pellet stove.... burning wood pellets. Much cheaper than corn at present. To use switchgrass, will require a new stove. As far as I know, there are no pellet stoves being sold, that are designed for switchgrass, but they are in the works.

Switchgrass, as well as ALL other agricultural products, has a high nitrogen content byproduct, and a high ash content byproduct. Even so, it is probably more economical and ecologically sound, in the long run, to spend the billions of dollars it will cost to change the coal fired power plants over to more "green" fuels.

Soybeans have a much higher BTU rating than just about anything else, other than coal. (I think), but they are also much more expensive than corn.

Corn prices are skyrocketing. Pork, which is normally fattened on corn feed, will soon be off the menu, due to the high cost of feed. That means no more BLT's, no more pork chops, no more pork sausage. (or pay a premium for it).

I drive a Diesel pickup. (Duramax). I get around 18 mpg all the time. At $4.20 per gallon for Diesel (more than twice what it cost in 2004), it is getting expensive to drive.

The cost of Diesel fuel, is going to be prohibitive for any and all farming operations this year. Less ground will be tilled, and that ground which is tilled, will get less tillage, meaning less production.

What foodstuffs are produced, will cost more to produce and more to deliver. A lot of Semi-trucks get about 4 mpg. That averages out to a cost of more than a dollar per mile, just for fuel. Those costs are hitting all of our wallets. The cost of vegetables, cereals, pasta, cooking oils, and any other agricultural items are getting hit by the rising cost of fuels TWICE. Anything and everything else that is transported from its producer to the marketplace is getting hit at least once.

I am not an alarmist type of person, but I can see the snowball effect coming.

Mark

Well, I think the points being made in Joker’s linked articles state that E-grass is being considered to supplement fuel in coal fired commercial power plants, not for use by individuals. In fact, it has been under trial in Europe for decades. To quote one of the pieces: “When mixed in a 50%-50% mixture with coal, it can be used in some current coal-burning power plants without modifications.” So no billions need be spent to modify them. In another article it states that “Nutrients such as nitrogen are transferred to the rhizome to be saved until the next growing season.” Nitrogen stays in the soil where it’s needed. And "Burning Miscanthus produces only as much carbon dioxide as it removes from the air as it grows . . ." [only if you don't inhale. lol]

I don’t think anyone is touting E-grass for electricity nor switchgrass for ethanol as total solutions to our food, fuel, and pollution problems, but they might be considered part of a total package of technologies which in combination could make a big difference. We just can’t keep going the way we have been.

[edit] BTW, all of this is a bit off topic. [/edit]
