I looked around the computer room last night and thought, there must be something I can do with all this old junk. My last game system was in a Antec P180 case with a good 550w PS, DVD drive, floppy and 2 WD 80gig IDE harddrives. For about $400US I can get the following to upgrade it and make a nice SETI cruncher: PNY OPTIMA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Intel BOXDG31PR LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Xubuntu 7.10 I am guessing that Crunch3r's apps will work on this. I don't plan to OC this system, just set it in the corner and check it every once in awhile. |

Thanks for the offer of help msattler. I will probably need it. I've not done anything with unix since the early 80s. I did get Ubuntu 7.10(32 and 64bit), Xubuntu 7.10(32 and 64 bit) burnt to CD lastnight. I tore the old case apart and cleaned everything I am going to reuse(susprised at where I found cat hair). Now its just a matter of a tax refund, hit newegg and the farm will have its first cow. I used to be a cruncher like you, then I took an arrow to the knee. |

That's about it! The Intel's run the SSE3 opptimized APP & the AMD's run the SSE2 optimized APP. Did have a P4 1.9ghz just running S@H but it was taking 8+ hours to do a single WU and the HSF was noisy & on the way out so that's now off. Happy Crunching! Please Vist The Seti City |

Two P4 D950 3.4 GB each with two 500MB sticks of Corsair Value Select PC5300 DDR2/667 Asus P5WD2-E Premium 975X CoolerMaster liquid coolers Sagitta case w/420W power supply Both share one 19" 1440 x 900 LCD and a cable modem. This setup has been troublesome with achieving native resolution and good communications. Blame the Netgear router and Iogear monitor switch. Never did get the digital cable(s) or digital monitor switch because of my and Best Buy's failure to recognize this necessity. Therefore the digital monitor never has displayed a digital signal, and always displays one computer at 1600 x 900 and the other at native. Once in a while communication fails and I have to disconnect and reconnect the router from power. Both machines together are presently doing 2200 RAC while being on about 22 hours per day during the past couple weeks. This may drop if more low-yield units hit the scene. Some fans (including one power supply) are getting a little noisy after 20 months. I replaced one for cooler - had to drive clear across town to get it. I had to ship one machine back to California summer 2006 because the cooler started to leak, for a downtime of almost two months. These machines were bought from CyberPower. |

Q2, Q3, and both of the Core2 are on a KVM switch. They are dedicated 24/7 cruchers. Only one of the Imacs get's used, the other two are also dedicated Cruchers. When Q4 gets done it will replace Core2-2.4. I am maxed out on space and amperage. I am part of team Seti.USA and take part in thier races, so I do other project, not just Seti, otherwise my RAC here would be higher. My Q1 should be my fastest machine, but it get's too hot is I try to OC at all. The CPU stays cool, but the MB get's too hot. I quess that't why it's called the extreme. Well back to work. |

1. Slow but steady P3 1.0ghz 500mb of RAM Windows XP Pro 2. Loaner PentiumD 805 2.6ghz 1gb of RAM Windows XP Pro 3. Dad's Machine PentiumD 805 3.0ghz 2gb of RAM Windows XP Pro 4. Laptop (My usage computer) Core Duo T2300 2gb of RAM Windows XP Pro 5. In Progress Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2ghz (will crank it up some) 2gb of RAM Windows XP64 All are monitorless unless I'm tweaking something, and the Loaner runs as a media server for my Xbox 360. I had a AMD XP 2400+ (clocked to 2600+) that just went kaput on me, I suspect motherboard as number one failure, so I decided now was the time to build a new Core 2 Duo system. Daniel |
