(Quoted from Pappa:) There are some that continue to push, in spite of common sense. Agreed. Hopefully the seasonal break will have let things cool to something better and more useful. New Year an' all that? Hopefully... If we speak about Astro, he intentionally created an account with the sole purposed of becoming banned. He pushed the limits until that happened. I am not sure of his purpose in doing so, but he decided that from information he had (correct or incorrect) to go down a road that was different than the "Astro" that is loved for his help. When he made the whole thing public, he forced Eric to make a choice. My personal interpretation is that of 'frustration' forcing the pace of change. Various aspects of the forums that are near "zero-priority" for the Science but a much greater priority for the "social scene" finally got some visibility. Some fixes appear to have been made. Hopefully there's been useful discussion also. Note that I don't fully agree with Astro's unilateral methods but then also, I've been rather surprised by the results. The Rules are posted, in some cases expanded as a result of individuals that forced new cases to be looked and expand the rules. I am sorry, but from my standpoint if their interest was truly Seti and Having Fun it would be easier to operate within the posted rules. Then this and many other threads here would be pointless. I would hope that the forums and moderators scheme have been usefully improved by the stirrings. Especially so before any other less well supported Boinc projects were to pull down the rest of Boinc due to forums problems! I've noticed small but useful improvements such as how to contact the mods group and for the PM notifications. A project is only as good as the sum of its most noticeable supporters... Some very good points there. One possible improvement that could be made to the mod list, might be for those who are mods to use their real names, or at least a contraction of them. Most of the best mods, in my opinion, are not afraid to hide behind an alias, but use their real identiies, either as part of their username, or regularly in conversation. I know (or suspect) that certain mods do have more than one ID here. Some have also made concerted efforts to hide their real names from public view. If someone is to be a mod, I think that they should have the courage to be truly public. Perhaps others can give me good reasons why this should not happen. Happy New Year Keith. Why should we are using our real name? I see no reason why. |

Why should we are using our real name? I see no reason why. Neither do I. The admins know who we are, that must be enough. Some of us have posted with our alias' for a very long time, myself I have used my (unique) alias the past three years, after I gave up my first account with my real name due to a severe case of both cyber and real life stalking where the authorities were involved. I will never ever use my real name again in cyberspace. EDIT: But it seems that I have got a new cyber stalker in someone who has snapped up my real name and who seems to be very interested in my doings and whereabouts in cyberspace. :-( "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

Some very good points there. Cyber and real life stalking where the police were involved. Is this a reason good enough to you? "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I don't know if he forwarded you the conversation, I will do so if you like. I do respect your decision to protect your real identity as much as possible. I have been around the internet since 1995 and am aware that there are many nasty people online as well as nice ones. If someone had explained the reason for your change of ID previously, I would have not spent so much time searching for malevolent reasoning behind it. I tried to piece together history out of mystery and managed to create more confusion in the process. When someone tries to hide something on the internet, they are rarely sucessful. Things like Google's web cache and other software will usually get around most peoples efforts if the user is skillful enough. I hope that you are not still having any problems from your former offline stalker. Happy New Year, Keith Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

It would probably be a good idea if every time someone submitted a post, they were reminded that these forums usually preserve eveything for posterity unless a post or thread is hidden by a mod. This might reduce some peoples post counts somewhat, but that would probably not be a bad thing. The golden rule should be "don't post something online that you would not say to that person face to face". I don't think that I have ever broken that rule. Keith Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

It would probably be a good idea if every time someone submitted a post, they were reminded that these forums usually preserve everything for posterity unless a post or thread is hidden by a mod. If we hide a thread or posting, you will get an e-mail. That must be enough.
Threads or postings are only hidden, not deleted. A hidden posting does not reduce you post counts.
I can only second that. I try only to do that way. (OK, sometimes I don´t) |

And if you had approached me directly in a PM or on the mod list I might have told you, but you didn't, you chose to make a big deal out of it. And it was 3 (three!!!) years ago I abandoned my old account, even I accidentally posted with it a couple of years ago because my Firefox browser seemed dead and I still had the old cookie in IE. Rom Walton, the project admin at that time was well aware of my new account and he knew the reason for why I created it. For your information, the person who stalked me also created havocs on this message board, so Rom knew very well what he was capable of. Yes, thank you, I don't have any problems with my real life stalker anymore, he has lost any credibility at any authority here and after I was told by the police that they don't consider him as dangerous. But I had a time where I feared for my safety and where people who cared for me were afraid for my safety as well. That some here want to rehash the existence of it, even I haven't posted with it for years, that is only to discredit me. Which a certain group of people have tried for more than two years now! My old account has been banned and we have asked Eric to ban it for life. So there's nothing more to see or to accuse me of. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I guess that depends on if you have chosen to stay with your current alias or if you want to change it again, just as you have done so many times before. Back when someone created an account with my unique user name, that was an intentional attempt to discredit me, again again, even that account had not posted anything at the time I found out. Am i the only one, with one account? Yes, that is a nice thing. Keith, you have inquired about me and in your thread you said that I am a controversial person here and you raised the question about if I can be moderator and be involved with the donation drive because of what you saw as controversy about my alias. Now, take a look at these, one account was created, this one with my unique user name, take a look: Click the pic I have never owned a Mac let alone created this account. It had crunched and my guess is that it was made ready to start posting pretending to be me. Luckily I found it and asked Eric to delete it before it came to that. I was informed about an another account with my unique user name on some other board where I never have had any accounts, take a look: Click the pic The person who created that one has come forward, so I know who it is, but the reason for creating that account in my (again unique) user name is still unclear to me, even the person gave some kind of explanation. What do you think about that? What does this make of people who will go to certain lengths to impersonate me? Have you thought about that this controversy you said was about me maybe was somebody else who will do whatever they can to create it? Ponder on this. And if you knew just half of what I have been exposed to during the past couple of year here, you would be shocked. Some of the worst was when a well-known person, if you want to know who PM me and I'll tell you who, had created an ad as a prostitute on a porn site for me with my email address. That person got caught red handed as I got his IP from the abuse department from that site. And for those out there, who read this, no, I will not be silenced anymore. So much of the controversy you may have seen about me is the result of a group of people who try make black to white and white to black, you mentioned yourself that there are a lot of weird people out there in cyberspace, if only you knew what I have encountered of some of those! > yes - i SHALL keep my 'present' alias as such . . . though i think the 'other' one - that somebody else created - should be removed . . . @ Eric - i give You my express permission to remove said 'other' . . . and while we're at it - why not track the person VIA the fact that they did Donate - isn't there a 'trail' left by said individual . . . I have never owned a Mac let alone created this account. I guess there are more than one Mac out there? And of course, as my friend, Jeffrey, you would never do anything like that. ;) "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |
