Hi All,
I did address this in another thread, but the more I got to thinking about it, and the fact that I destroyed my cache again today lead me to this thread. Right now where I live in Virginia, we are having problems with power outages for small (Very small) periods of time. When we lose power and my computers come back up, the Boinc Software enableds all network connections by default. This is great for those on Broadband, but kinda sucks for us dial-up's. With the loss of my cache again today, I have pinpointed the problem to the network setting. I Will try to explain: when 1 Wu is finished, if the newtwork access is not disabled on Boinc, it will attempt to connect over and over and over...
The next WU will begin processing until finished and the same cycle continues.
With this in mind, when I do realize that we have had a power outage, I immeadiatly disable the network access. I then get online and begin to transfer the finished WU's. This is where the problem begins. They upload, and then they immeadiatly get a Checksum M5 error and become unrecoverable.., I then manually update, and all the remaining WU's that have not been crunched yet, go to a "ready to Report " state.
Ther is nothing I can do at this point, because as soon as I update again they are all lost. Something is making them appear as if they are Garbage files or something. I am not even sure if the ones that show complete are actually getting credited. On my fastest box I lost a total of 66 Wu's after recounting them, that were ready to send completed, but all came back with an error of unrecoverable.
Bottom line, is the only thing that was the same in both instances, and instances before, was the Network connection settings.

For all you Coders, Programmers, or computer wizards out there, is there some way that a Choice for default settings could be put in our Account Page. This way the setting would stay however set, even during outages. The reason I say "choice" is because I know that the broadband connecters would always have the newtwork enabled by default.
Is this a possibility, or am I spitting in the wind. I am sure this "fix" would help more people then just me. If not can anyone tell me how I can change the default setting permenatly on my end.

Any help would be appreciated. I know that there are people waiting on credits out there,, but if Myself and others lose there entire caches again.

I am usuing Boinc Version 4.08 on the box that crashed today, and the other box still has 4.03.
Running Win Xp Home with SP1. ( I deleted SP2 weeks ago.

Thank You All In Advance,

Very Sincerely,

Rocky Cudd

P.S. I have already budgeted money to buy A couple of APS's for my computers, but thats just a bandaid. :-)

Hi Rocky

It dosen't looks like the client is saving this propretiy right now.
the same here.
I "suffer" with you.

what do you whant?

A server based solution over html, par example the account, suggest an activ connection to the internet. A sever based solution must reflect settings for every host, and those settings has to be synchronized with the client.

A local tool based solution would letting without connnection to berkeley
to allow or disallow the networks access of yout clients, this is finaly your
"need" or suggest.

If you are look right now for a solution, take an add-on allowing the remote setting of the networks of a boinc client

You ARE using 4.08, so one prerequisite is given.

right now there are 2 tools, AFAK, giving this possibility to the user.

One is published and known for a long time, called BoincView

[url=http://boincview.amanheis.de]
this tool has many functions, one of them, is setting the "network access mode" to a remote boinc client.

Hi RichiMeister,\
I will attempt to download BoincView as you suggest.

If you have had the same problem, is it just the same way I have explained.
I am going to post this on the Questions and answers board, as due to my stupidity, I did not read the whole message board page to realize we had that site.

Thanks for all your Help.

Have a Great Day And A Better Tomorrow, and Happy crunching!

Warm Regards,
Rocky
