Another blast from the past. The first successful strategic bomber.

Arguably, the best fighter/bomber of all time, let me present the de Havilland Mosquito.

In an era when metal was king, she was of wood construction (the original composite material). Proposed as a means to allow furniture and piano makers to contribute to the war effort, the original concept was turned down by the powers-that-be.

Convinced of their aircrafts’ potential, de Haviland built their prototypes on spec, with no real hope of making a sale.

Since she could not compete with the payload capabilities of her competitors (the Lancaster’s and Halifax’s), and had minimal air-to-air defensive armament, she was originally considered a failure.

However, because of her speed and incredible manuverabilty (faster and more fleeting than even the much praised Spitfire) the Mosquitoes found effective use as pathfinders and re-con aircraft.

With a newly mounted nose cannon and early radar sets, they proved the only successful defence against German V1.

Those nose cannons, with the addition of wing mounted rockets, made the Mosquitoes effective at costal defence, with an exceptional record against U-Boat targets.

Though not well appreciated, the most effective effort of the Mosquito was probably in logistical attack. While the Lancaster’s B-29s (et. al.) earned their glory attacking German cities (and their civilian populations) the lowly Mosquitoes engaged in insanely dangerous low-level night-time attacks against logistical targets (rail lines, fuel and ammo dumps) as well as day-time troop support efforts against artillery and tank targets. (Much like the lowly, but beloved by those who fly when, Warthogs (A-10 Thunderbolt) of more recent vintage.)

Above all this, however, the Mosquito was beloved the mothers and wives (or girlfriends) as an aircraft that could absorb an incredible amount of battle damage and still see their crew of two safely home.

IMHO the best general purpose military aircraft ever, the de Havilland Mosquito.

I've read on the NYTimes that all USAF F-15s have been grounded because of an accident caused probably by metal fatigue. The fate of Comets is being repeated.
