Maybe I am off thread but if you go to the NYTimes site you will find two articles on war, one on the destruction of Monte Cassino Abbey in WW2 and one on the WW1 American war cemeteries in France. They can give you an idea of what war is really more than any movie.

in all honesty, my very favorite war-themed movie is undoubtedly Starship Troopers. I realize it isn't a historical film, but I adore it!! "I'm from Buenos Aires, and I say kill 'em all!" haha legendary dialogue!
